8/9/2022 (Permalink)

Water intrusion events can affect more than one unit. SERVPRO can quickly remediate the situation.

Call SERVPRO to Perform Commercial Water Removal in Your Riverhead Apartment Building

Many owners of apartment buildings deal with water damage from time to time. Water damage needs remediating quickly to prevent costly repairs and loss of tenants. The recovery of a water-damaged apartment building is a complex process that involves several specialists working together.

What Are The Consequences Of Water Damage In Apartment Buildings?

Water damage can have severe and lasting effects on a multifamily dwelling, including ruining the building, such as walls, floor flooring, and the tenants' personal property, such as furniture and electrical equipment. Performing efficient commercial water removal in your Riverhead apartment building is vital. In severe cases, water damage can affect several units. The aftermath can be devastating and make the property unlivable.

How Can Restorers Help?

A water intrusion incident requires a rapid response to reduce loss to both the property and the belongings in it. SERVPRO franchise professionals are experts at water damage restoration in apartments and commercial buildings of any size, regardless of the severity of the damage. Our team can assess the destruction and create an appropriate plan to restore the building and its contents.

What type of equipment does SERVPRO use for the restoration process?

We seek to complete water restoration jobs thoroughly and quickly. For that reason, we use sophisticated water removal and drying equipment. It includes:

  • Commercial-grade water pumps
  • Air movers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Moisture meters
  • Injected high-pressure drying systems

We also use antimicrobial products that prevent the growth of microorganisms like bacteria. We can remove dirt, bacteria, and the accompanying odors from the floors, walls, and furnishings.

How Do You Dry Buildings?

Our crew accelerates natural drying by using dehumidification, heat, and ventilation. We can use portable heaters to dry affected areas faster. Our team also uses desiccant dehumidifiers, which absorb moisture from the air and eliminate it from the desiccant material as water. Fresh air also plays an essential role when it comes to drying a property. In the right conditions, the passing of large amounts of relatively dry warm air over damp surfaces achieves effective drying. We can accomplish this by opening all windows and doors when the weather conditions are conducive.

If there is water damage in your apartment building, do not panic. Contact SERVPRO of The North Fork to help you remove the water and dry the structure. Our 24-hour helpline is (631) 591-3771.

Fire Engulfed My Riverhead Kitchen and Other Rooms Have Smoke Damage. Where Should I Begin?

8/9/2022 (Permalink)

No matter the amount of damage form a fire, SERVPRO will be there to assist your Riverhead home.

Seek Professional Help from SERVPRO Experts to Restore Your Fire Damaged Riverhead property.

Your kitchen is a hub for activities that aim to nourish your family. However, fire can break out at any moment leading to significant damage. Fortunately, SERVPRO restoration experts have undergone thorough training in handling fire damage in Riverhead homes.

What Steps Should I Take After A Fire?

The essential step to take after a kitchen fire is to protect yourself and those who depend on you. Contact restoration experts immediately to manage the fire damage in your Riverhead residence to prevent costly damage and get you back to your daily routine. Do not forget to contact your insurance company to file your claims. Avoid the affected area to minimize the spreading of soot and smoke residues. Since you lack proper skills and equipment, do not clean any surfaces, including rooms with smoke residues.

Can You Inspect My Property Thoroughly?

At SERVPRO, we perform a thorough inspection, even if the damage does not look severe. Our team of technicians checks all areas, even those that you cannot readily see, including:

  • Gas lines
  • Electrical systems
  • Ductwork

The other thing we check for is water. Water reacts with soot and smoke residues if left for an extended period, causing discoloration of surfaces. When there is water damage from firefighting efforts, our technicians can use a thermal imaging camera to check for moisture. The device helps to see how water traveled in a building.

How Do You Clean Soot and Smoke Residues From Appliances?

At SERVPRO, we have state-of-the-art equipment and products that help us with various clean surfaces. When constructing appliances, manufacturers use metal, glass, composite materials, paint, plastic, and Formica. These surfaces are nonabsorbent, and our technicians can easily clean them using a water-based detergent solution.

Since smoke damages present complex situations that may involve greasy soils and heavy smoke residues, we can use the Wall and All Surface Cleaner to clean your appliances. Our technicians have the skill and decades of experience in using this product on various surfaces. Before cleaning appliances, we unplug them to prevent electrical shock. We also clean the cords and look out for cracks and other defects. We can work with a competent appliance repair technician who can inspect your appliances for damage and perform the necessary repairs.

When there is fire damage in your home, you can seek help from SERVPRO of The North Fork. Call us at (631) 591-3771 for effective and fast restoration. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Professional Mold Removal for Riverhead

8/9/2022 (Permalink)

Our techs are ready 24/7, 365 days a year.

SERVPRO Remediation and Removal Technicians are Available

Mold infestations can creep up on your property. These microscopic organisms thrive in warm, humid conditions and require little light to grow. As a result, mold colonies can crop up in wall cavities, subfloor, attic, or crawlspace. Often visible signs or odors of infestation result from several weeks or months of microbial growth. SERVPRO is a licensed remediation firm that can help eliminate the infestation on your property.

Enacting mold removal services in Riverhead gives your home the best chance of a full recovery following infestation. There are two parts to returning your home to a preloss condition. The first part is removal which involves physically removing items, belongings, and materials infested with microorganisms. Removing moldy materials can be challenging as removal often disturbs colonies, leading to the release of spores. Spores are the seeds of microbial infestation that can travel on air currents and infest other home areas. Our technicians can help with:

  • Mold remediation
  • Mold removal
  • Mold inspection

Our technicians take care when removing infested materials to reduce the spread of spores in the home. These procedures are broadly known as containment. Containment can involve cleaning rooms, equipment, or clothing when moving from area to area and setting up physical barriers. If extreme measures are required to remove molds - such as controlled demolition of infested drywall- we can deploy damaging air pressure equipment. Negative air pressure machines work similarly to vacuums but are much larger and capable of drawing several cubic feet of air into their filtration ducts. This equipment can help capture spores and prevent them from travelling to unaffected parts of the home.

  • Infested materials must be double sealed before being transported out of the property to reduce cross-contamination.
  • Clothing or fabrics that have signs of mold are often non-salvageable. However, high-value items may be suitable for restoration using Esporta suspension washing systems.

Get back control of the mold issue in your home. Contact SERVPRO of The North Fork for mold removal at (631) 591-3771.

We Have The State Of The Art Equipment To Restore Your Riverhead Home

8/8/2022 (Permalink)

A fire in this home caused smoke and soot damage and our professional crew was able to assess the damage and quickly restore the entire house.

What to Expect from Professional Fire Recovery in Riverhead Homes

Fire recovery efforts are never as straightforward as you might think, and with the need to address all levels of damage to Riverhead homes as promptly as possible, many property owners choose the experience of professional recovery teams. Our SERVPRO professionals have unique training to help address all phases of restoration and recovery, including mitigation, cleaning, air quality improvement, and content management. Knowing what to expect from our team when they first arrive can help you to be more at ease with each of these steps as they occur.

One of the unfortunate truths about any level of fire damage to Riverhead homes is that multiple symptoms exist simultaneously. Addressing one, even with the premier equipment available to our restoration team, does not address the problem as a whole. You need a team of professionals capable of handling each of these points with efficiency and confidence. Because of our preparedness for disasters before they happen, we can arrive at the damaged residence quickly with the personnel and equipment to begin mitigation immediately.

Before we can begin restoration techniques, our crew chief and production manager must walk through the property and thoroughly assess the damage. We have sophisticated detection tools ideal for choosing the extent of water damage left behind after extinguishing efforts. We can also determine the deterioration or structural integrity of construction materials, flooring, framework, and other areas.

Fire damage mitigation is an entire phase of our work explicitly designed to help save our customers money by lessening the impact of fire loss damages. One of the linchpins of this phase of our work is content management. Our SERVPRO team can separate the contents and furniture of your property from the damaged house and lingering effects by taking them to our facility for careful assessment and focused cleaning or deodorization.

Many steps make up our total fire loss restoration process, and with experience and cutting-edge equipment, our SERVPRO of The North Fork team can help. Give us a call anytime that you need us at (631) 591-3771.

We Discuss The Structural Risks In Early Flood Mitigation In Jamesport

8/8/2022 (Permalink)

You can count on the experience and fast response of our SERVPRO of The North Fork team.

Structural Risks in Early Flood Mitigation for Jamesport Homes

When considering hazards that can exist in Jamesport homes after flooding, most people think about contamination and standing water throughout the lower levels of the property. From the assessment of the damage through the early stages of mitigation, our SERVPRO team braves the conditions to get drying and recovery efforts started. Chiefly, structural weaknesses can be a persistent threat during this time.

As much as controlled demolition can help remove compromised portions of construction material after flood damage to Jamesport homes, the earliest stages of recovery can feature several structural concerns that could impact our technicians without warning. These possibilities can both encourage the acquisition of flood recovery technicians like ours more efficiently. They can also help customers appreciate some of these existent threats if they consider DIY restoration.

Flooring: Wood flooring is often the most susceptible to losing its strength and resilience when exposed to standing water and excessive moisture after flooding for more than a few days. With enough degradation, these materials can fail to support the weight of a technician and break.

Ceilings: Ceiling tile and plasters can become weighted by the presence of water. The heavier materials like insulation above these tiles become, the more strain and pressure placed on a weak structural design.

Drywall: Drywall is another area that can quickly become irreparably damaged by the presence of water. After no more than 24 hours, direct exposure to drywall can soak thoroughly through soft sheetrock and change the composition. Swelling and sagging of the material can force our technicians to pursue controlled demolition before it becomes too heavy to remain attached where it was installed.

Protecting our technicians and customers is a priority of our flood restorers working on the damaged property. You can count on the experience and fast response of our SERVPRO of The North Fork team. Give us a call anytime at (631) 591-3771.

Drying Kitchen Materials After Riverhead Water Damage

8/8/2022 (Permalink)

If you found a leak, don’t worry SERVPRO

Riverhead Kitchens Can Suffer Great Water Damage

Like fires, a high percentage of water damage occurs in the kitchen. Many causes of substantial damage to the structure demand immediate action from our SERVPRO team to mitigate loss. These include:

  • Appliance malfunctions
  • Plumbing leaks
  • Pipe bursts
  • Broken fixtures

Drying Cabinets After Damage

Cabinets, especially base units, are highly susceptible to water damage in Riverhead kitchens. Leaks and drips can slowly erode these materials, even causing them to swell and distort after prolonged exposure. When units are salvageable, we position air movers within the cabinets to effectively evaporate surface water.

Clearing Water from Kitchen Flooring

Flooring in the kitchen is often water-resistant, at least initially. Fast action by our team can allow for extraction and surface drying with minimal absorption concerns in many cases.

Why Materials Might Need to Be Removed

It is important to understand the criteria SERVPRO uses to decide if materials and building elements are salvageable. A large factor in this is the cost to the customer. There are times when resurfacing and drying cabinetry and other kitchen staples could be more expensive than replacing them. Other factors could include:

  • Degradation - This measures damage to the cabinets, counters, and other exposed materials. Deteriorating elements must be removed and replaced.
  • Mold Development - If mold has become a concern, this could indicate that replacement could make more sense than restoring.
  • Staining/Discoloration - The minerals and additives to water can leave residues that stain or discolor materials. If cleaning is not possible, SERVPRO must replace damaged elements.

Kitchens are often damaged by water because of the convergences of the plumbing system for multiple fixtures and appliances. When you notice water damage, let our SERVPRO of The North Fork team help make it "Like it never even happened." Call now at (631) 591-3771.

Mold Remediation Solutions for Historic Riverhead

Mold remediation and SERVPRO are the solution to the damage in your Riverhead home

Riverhead Homes Benefit from SERVPRO's Mold Abatement

Riverhead is a community that has dealt with a fair share of humid conditions and groundwater threats resulting in mold development. With a town with such a long-standing history dating back to the early 1700s, there are many properties and landmarks worth protecting when these disasters occur.

A Colonial Community Still Thriving

Modern Riverhead has mold-damaged structures despite the town's history and its role in prominent eras of history.

Historic Districts and Properties of Riverhead

As this is one of the state's older communities, it has many historic properties and landmarks worth protecting for the future. The care and consideration of these structures require special restoration or cleaning when disasters occur. Older homes on historical registries often have moisture and insulation problems resulting in mold infestations.

The Suffolk County Historical Society Museum

Not only does this museum contain many historical artifacts, but the structure suffered a mold infestation that was remediated by our SERVPRO team. We have the expertise--IICRC AMRT applied microbial remediation technicians utilizing advanced equipment with cleaning and biocide products to get the job done right.

Addressing Mold Threats with Swift Action in Riverhead Homes

Microbial growth can be one of the most challenging situations your home or business might face. When mold remediation for Riverhead homes is necessary, it is vital to choose experienced and professional technicians to complete the job. The faster our team can arrive at the damage location after a third party determines the presence of mold colonization, the better.

The severity of the infestation dictates the means of remediation. Carefully evaluating what the property needs can reduce the possibilities of unnecessary tear-out and reconstruction. Our remediators often work to apply surface cleaning or abrasive techniques to remove the microorganisms without requiring the material to be discarded. We strive to restore and not replace mold damaged building elements and assemblies.

Mold can be a damaging presence in your home and one that requires the experience of our SERVPRO of The North Fork remediators to overcome. Contact us at (631) 591-3771.

Are Plumbing Leaks Causing Water Damage to Your Riverhead Restaurant?

5/12/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial water damage is no match for SERVPRO. Call us when water damages your restaurant for fast and effective remediation

Plumbing Leaks in Wall Cavities of Your Riverhead Restaurant

Plumbing networks are in nearly every wall cavity surrounding the kitchen and prep areas of your Riverhead restaurant. As you are always looking to provide a thorough yet efficient cleaning approach to these areas, much of the storage and structural elements are stainless steel to complement the tile flooring. While all of these materials might be water-resistant, drywall, baseboard, and framing might be at risk when plumbing leaks occur inside of walls around your kitchen.

The trouble with breaches in your water lines inside the walls is that you might not recognize water damage in your Riverhead restaurant until it has soaked through materials and come out to the main kitchen area or the dining space on the other side of this shared wall. Contending these adverse conditions requires the fast response of professional restorers like our SERVPRO team, as there must be advanced techniques employed to reduce continued damage to exposed materials and to dry up this structural cavity as quickly as possible.

Shutting off the water supply to this damaged portion of the pipe is an excellent way to begin the recovery once you have been made aware of the problem. Working alongside reputable commercial contractors, we can help prepare the area for controlled demolition and plumbing repair by marking the dryline where moisture damage stops on drywall. Once these steps have taken place, our SERVPRO team can focus on drying out the affected areas with our premier equipment. This approach includes our centrifugal and axial air movers, extraction tools including light wands and sump pumps, and refrigerant dehumidifiers for efficient moisture removal in controlled temperatures.

Depending on which areas have seen the most water damage, we might employ positive pressure systems through drilled holes where baseboards used to be in either the dining area of your restaurant or the kitchen side. These units force heated air through cavities in spaces where flood cuts were unnecessary. We can attempt to limit the sight of these units for your customers, should we make it possible to continue food preparation during the restoration and recovery phases of your restaurant.

Water losses can be a considerable challenge, especially when you do not know they have happened. Give our SERVPRO of The North Fork to help however you need at (631) 591-3771.

SERVPRO Aids with Fire Restoration in Riverhead

When most people think about a fire igniting inside their homes, they think of a devastating disaster with several burned materials in the structure. However, most structural blazes are minor, but they can still cause damage in the form of soot residues and unpleasant aromas.

When our SERVPRO crew works on fire damage restoration in Riverhead, cleaning your structural components and possessions can become a significant part of the project. During remediation jobs, our number one goal is to return your house to its pre-damaged state. To do this, we must clean off any soils on the surfaces of your contents and building materials and remove any malodor particles. But, cleaning soot can be very difficult depending on the type of soil present and the kinds of surfaces affected.

Luckily, our SERVPRO technicians have access to various products to clean your different types of contents. When your property needs to be dry cleaned, we (or a third party dry cleaner) can use petroleum-based dry cleaning solvents for residues on draperies or fabrics that might shrink if wet cleaned. Volatile dry solvents evaporate quickly and leave behind no residues. Volatile solvents can suspend soils and act as a lubricant to remove them.

We can use wood oil soaps or furniture polishes to clean away soot residues from wooden items. When cleaning carpets or upholstered furniture, we can use a combination of shampoos, pretreatments, and fabric rinses to get rid of soil.

We can also provide services other than cleaning:

  • Fire Damage Debris Removal
  • Structural Deodorization
  • Fire & Water Damage Restorations
  • Pack-Ins and Pack-Outs

If you notice that smoke has negatively affected several items in your house, call SERVPRO of The North Fork at (631) 591-3771.

Penetration Points for Flood Damage in Riverhead Homes

3/25/2022 (Permalink)

Don't let flood damage take over your property, Call SERVPRO of The North Fork at (631) 591-3771.

Restoring Flood Damage Begins with Stopping Intruding Water in Riverhead Properties

It is important to understand how water can enter the house during flood events and what immediate mitigation solutions are necessary once our team arrives. We are specialists capable of helping with:

  • Water cleanup
  • Surface disinfection
  • Thorough drying
  • Repairs

Basement Access

Through port windows and structural openings around the basement, flood damage in Riverhead can quickly and completely engulf a basement level of the house. Substantial water can enter through available pathways, and because this floor is much lower than the grade outside, it can allow thousands of gallons of water to enter the property in extreme situations. Window wells can help prevent the intrusion of groundwater.

Attic Penetration

Storm damage events can cripple or severely damage your roof. When these vulnerabilities exist, runoff and other precipitation concerns can allow water to penetrate the attic space. Not only can this prolonged moisture facilitate mold growth, but excessive water penetration can flood both the attic and subsequent living spaces beneath it.

Drain Intrusions

During flood events, pathways like floor drains and toilets can backup and overflow into your home when connected mains become clogged or plugged under the duress of excessive flow. This backup is considered a biohazard event, making it critical to clean up and restore as soon as possible to prevent contaminants from overwhelming the structure.

Structural Openings and Pressure

Between hydrostatic pressure and literal structural openings like the front door of your house, there are multiple additional pathways for floodwater to enter the home. When your structural openings match the height of the grade around your house, any flash flooding can bring this water inside the property's main level.

Understanding where flood damage is likely to result in a home or business can focus attention on potentially problematic structure areas. As leading flood restoration professionals, we can help when your Riverhead home becomes impacted by storm damages. Give our SERVPRO of The North Fork team a call now at (631) 591-3771.

Removing Soot from Many Types of Contents in Jamesport Homes

3/10/2022 (Permalink)

Don’t let your property be a victim of fire damage, SERVPRO of The North Fork is only a call away.

We Have Specific Strategies and Equipment to Overcome Content Damage During Fire Restoration in Jamesport Properties.

Soot is a big obstacle for restorers. When it impacts homeowners' contents and personal belongings, varying strategies will be needed based on their composition and the severity of the damage. Before recovery can begin, we must first evaluate the damage.

Cataloging Damage and Content Inventory

Early inspection during fire restoration in Jamesport homes shows the impact of soot on contents and furniture. We catalog this damage and design a restoration plan. Our constant inventory of these items does many things like:

  • Helps monitor cleaning progress
  • Tracks the location of items at all times
  • Keeps homeowner aware of restoration milestones

Hard/Non-Porous Contents

Low-porosity materials are all throughout the house. These might be utensils from the kitchen, glassware, porcelain contents, ceramic items, and more. With these objects, soot cannot penetrate beyond the surface, and our submersion ultrasonic tank can effectively clean and remove soot and smoke residues.

Soft Materials and Fabrics

Soft materials are a challenge when affected by soot and smoke damage. Not only must upholstery and delicate fabric cleaning equipment be used, often at our nearby SERVPRO facility, but we must also address the presence of harsh odors. Fabrics can readily absorb malodors, so cleanup must also include solutions for this.

Furniture Restoration

Furniture must be restored similarly to wall surfaces, using a combination of mechanical actions to remove buildup and loose debris and then cleaning the surface with specifically designed products. Wood crème or citrus-based cleaners, for example, can help to renew the surface after soot removal.

Soot can have a disastrous and destructive impact on many contents and personal belongings in a home. As rapidly as these hazards develop, SERVPRO of The North Fork provides effective cleaning and restoration strategies for the impacted items from your house. We are here when you need us – call today at (631) 591-3771.

Working Around Your Riverhead Shop’s Schedule for Water Removal

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of The North Fork at (631) 591-3771 for assistance from a professional remediation company.

We Prioritize Practical Actions and Services to Keep Your Riverhead Business Going When You Need Water Removal.

There are several types of water damage your shop or business might experience. With the severity of these situations, quick action must take place to ensure that you can continue to serve customers through this otherwise turbulent time. Our fast-responding SERVPRO team helps mitigate loss by answering early restoration questions.

Where Is The Water Coming From?

One of the first stages of water removal for Riverhead shops and stores is determining what is causing the water damage in the first place. Often this is an easy situation to identify as you must track where water flow is coming from and start at this point. However, slower leaks and drips might not be as easy to follow. Often, the biggest threats to shops stem from:

  • Leaking pipes
  • Broken fixtures
  • Damaged sprinkler system
  • Flooding

What Will it Take to Contain It?

Containment plays a critical role in the ability of our SERVPRO team to keep your doors open through the restoration and recovery phases to come. Physical barriers prevent the movement and migration of surface water and the elevated humidity and moisture content in the environment that could promote mold development.

Can The Business Operate Without This Area?

As our professionals work to mitigate loss and keep your business going, one question that must be asked is whether your shop can function in part without the affected zone. Closing off a portion of the property allows us to work off-hours to restore the damage and lets you continue to function in a limited capacity around this cleanup.

What Emergency Services Are Needed Now?

Sometimes immediate actions are necessary to protect the building and the wares. We arrive with mitigative tools like extractors and vacuums to remove standing water before further migrating in the shop.

When your business suffers water damage, let our SERVPRO of The North Fork team help you make it “Like it never even happened.” Call now at (631) 591-3771.

The Flood Damage Timeline for Restoration in Jamesport Homes

2/22/2022 (Permalink)

Call your local professionals at SERVPRO of The North Fork to ensure your home is dry and sanitary.

Phases of Flood Damage Show a Need for Quick Recovery in Jamesport Properties.

Removing flood damage from your home is a process that must get started right away. There is a pressing, finite restoration time before property damage becomes irreparable. Our fast-responding SERVPRO technicians recognize these destructive milestones and have boots on the ground to help you through these disasters quickly.

Immediately Following Water Intrusion

Right after flood damage in Jamesport homes begins, you see water spread throughout the structure. This floodwater can rapidly target sensitive materials like carpeting that absorb the liquid on contact. Any paper goods in the path of this intruding water are often ruined after this exposure.

Within a Day of Water Exposure

After a full day of water exposure, wood framing and elements throughout the house can begin to swell. Carpets, fabrics, and upholstery have fully absorbed floodwater and show the effects through the early stages of deterioration. If water restoration is not started at this stage or earlier, elements like the flooring and heavily exposed building materials could become unsalvageable.

After a Few Days of Flood Exposure

Going this long without a restoration response sees the house experiencing the earliest stages of mold development, and this organism can rapidly spread in this moist environment. Physical signs of colonization are likely present with spotting on surfaces such as drywall and other organic matter. Growing microorganisms can present greater contamination concerns if standing water is still present.

Handling Riverhead Kitchen Fire Damage After a Cooking Fire

2/12/2022 (Permalink)

When a kitchen fire damages your home, SERVPRO fire damage restoration IICRC certified technicians will be on-site within 4 hours of the initial call.

Riverhead SERVPRO Technicians Remediate Smoke and Protein Fire Damage

Home fire damage can prove challenging for Riverhead homeowners to mitigate without professional assistance, especially in the kitchen. Soot clings to nooks and crannies that can be easy to overlook, and transparent, greasy protein residues from meats catching fire require specialized care to remove the malodors associated with them.

Certified SERVPRO fire damage techs remove Riverhead kitchen charring, stains, and residues with a combination of tried-and-true cleaning methods and cutting-edge restoration technologies. The fire cleanup process is designed to be efficient and restoration-focused to minimize repair and replacement costs for homeowners.

SERVPRO Solutions for Soot and Protein Residues After Kitchen Fires

Fire mitigation techs combine multiple factors, such as debris pickup, demolition, containment procedures, and negative air pressure establishment, to create an ideal environment for kitchen soot removal that minimizes the risk of secondary damages from particles spreading through vent systems and contact with surfaces outside of the kitchen.

  • SERVPRO professionals begin soot residue removal with manual cleaning of light, dry soils. Dry cleaning comes before wet cleaning, and techs work from ceiling to floor for more efficient soot pickup
  • HEPA filter vacuums pick up soot particles as small as 0.3 microns in size–a fraction of the thickness of an average human hair, which is about 100 microns
  • Wet cleaners include EPA-registered antimicrobials and alkaline cleaners, as well as cleaning solutions for hydrophilic and lipophilic soils
  • Odorous protein residues can be transformed into water-soluble material through the use of specialized enzyme digesters designed to eat proteins
  • Technicians can deploy extraction units, air movers, and dehumidifiers to perform water damage drying if moisture is present

Homeowners seeking “Like it never even happened” services can call SERVPRO of The North Fork at (631) 591-3771 24/7, including weekends and holidays.

2/5/2022 (Permalink)

When your home needs water damage restoration, SERVPRO techs use the latest technology and equipment for every size disaster. We are here to help.

Jamesport SERVPRO Water Mitigation Technicians Can Extract Moisture 24/7

Basement water cleanup can prove challenging for Riverhead homeowners, especially during winter. One small pipe leak can allow gallons of water into a property and onto basement furniture, storage items, and structural components. The potential for costly structural repairs can increase without fast-acting professional intervention.

Jamesport water mitigation professionals from SERVPRO can render extraction, drying, sanitation, and rebuilding services within hours of a homeowner’s initial call. From calibrated moisture sensors and meters to industrial-grade extraction units, restoration equipment is designed to be flexible in application and effective at detecting and removing water from a given property.

SERVPRO’s Moisture Detection and Extraction Methods

Before SERVPRO technicians can set up air movers and dehumidifiers, they must inspect the property and pinpoint water damage. Once factors like temperature, damage location, and relative and specific humidity are established, the crew can begin moisture extraction, which eliminates excess water and accelerates the structural and content drying process.

  • Inspection tools include penetrating and non-penetrating moisture sensors and meters, which can be calibrated for surfaces such as wood and drywall
  • Thermal imaging cameras detect water behind walls and ceilings through changes in temperature consistent with moisture exposure
  • Data collected during inspection helps SERVPRO technicians establish accurate drying goals
  • Before setting up dehumidifiers and air movers for drying, technicians use portable extractors, mops, squeegees, and wet/dry vacuums to prepare the basement
  • If the basement has a large volume of standing water present, techs can use truck-mounted extractors, and gas-powered sump pumps to eliminate excess moisture

Property owners can call (631) 591-3771 for mitigation and restoration services from SERVPRO of The North Fork. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster and ready to respond to the community’s needs.

Water damage restoration services by SERVPRO are second to none. We are ready at moment's notice 24/7 365 days a year.

Water Restoration Techs at SERVPRO Revitalize Living Room Furniture

Riverhead homeowners dealing with plumbing leaks or burst pipes can feel frustrated and overwhelmed by the amount of moisture their furniture can be exposed to when disaster strikes. Different fibers and materials require equally varied types of care. Many property owners are unlikely to have the materials or resources available to quickly apply water restoration solutions tailored to specific types of furniture finishes or upholstery fabrics.

Riverhead water restoration professionals from SERVPRO provide 24/7 mitigation services for homeowners, including upholstery cleaning and drying. Technician training covers such cleanup topics as caring for specific fibers to maximize the restoration potential of upholstery fabrics, wood furniture, and other living room structural materials and contents.

SERVPRO Carefully Handles Water-Damaged Upholstery After Disaster

Living room furniture impacted by water damage can suffer various effects depending on the material and extent of moisture exposure.

  • Dry clean-only fibers may have water spots. In these cases, techs can wet the entire piece to minimize the risk of visible water stains
  • Air movers and low-grain refrigerant dehumidifiers can be positioned to quickly dry wet upholstery to prevent the onsetting of mildew and other forms of microbial growth
  • Furniture stains can bleed onto carpets or area rugs, particularly if they come from sagging upholstery or finished wooden legs. SERVPRO spot cleaning methods can
  • The longer a piece of furniture is exposed to water, the more likely it is that the framing is warped, cracked, or swollen. Water also weakens furniture glues and can cause the metal backing of furniture buttons and plugs to rust

SERVPRO of The North Fork can be reached at (631) 591-3771. This crew can make homes look and feel “Like it never even happened,” after a disaster.

Why Are Odors Difficult for Jamesport Homeowners to Address with DIY Fire Restoration?

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

No two fire events are alike. You can trust the trained professionals at SERVPRO for complete fire damage remediation.

Only Certified Technicians Have the Fire Restoration Tips and Equipment to Bring Your Jamesport Home Back to Pre-Fire Condition

No two fire events are precisely the same because many factors are involved. The size of the property, building materials involved, contents, cause, and accelerants all come into play. Therefore, you need a trained team to handle house fire cleanup so that you can ensure your property gets left without lingering odors and costly damage. SERVPRO knows how to adapt accordingly with all of the fire restoration jobs we are called to, taking the time to get every facet of the project right. We work hard so that we can leave your property “Like it never even happened.”

Why Can’t I Plan for DIY Fire Restoration in Jamesport?

Even a small fire on your Jamesport's home second floor calls for skilled remediation to ensure all areas are covered. DIY projects leave the door open for hidden dangers in the home from structural damage, but lingering odors often get left behind as a constant reminder of the fire event. SERVPRO analyzes the soils and residues present to determine the right products, tools, and methods to use. Our odor control technicians (OCT) look at the following factors when inspecting soot deposits on all surfaces:

  • Substances and materials burned
  • How quickly combustion occurred
  • Oxygen levels present at the time of the fire

For dry smoke particles, our crew may use brushes or sponges to remove them. Wet smoke can be more stubborn, so we usually employ wet cleaning methods to help emulsify and dissolve bonds between the particles and surfaces.

Why call SERVPRO of The North Fork when you require fire restoration? Because we stop at nothing to ensure you have your home back to normal. We are available 24-hours a day by dialing (631) 591-3771, or you can request help online.

Water Damages Threatening Riverhead Homes During Cold

12/28/2021 (Permalink)

Winter weather can be destructive for area residences. Be sure and winterize your home before the cold weather sets in.

There are Several Potential Water Damage Events in Riverhead That Harsh Winter Conditions Could Cause

The winter months can be hazardous and destructive with storm damages, flooding, ice formation, and other threats to area properties. When these conditions lead to water damage within a home or business, it is up to our experienced SERVPRO team to help.

What Are the Main Contributors to Water Damage This Winter?

Between frozen pipes and ice damming for Riverhead homes, many properties every year suffer substantial damages during the winter months. Several of the top contributors include:

  • Roof damages
  • Ice damming
  • Flooding/ice jamming
  • Freezing pipes
  • Frozen hose bibs

How Do You Avoid Frozen Water Lines?

Every home could potentially become a victim of freezing pipes and subsequent water damage under the right conditions. Insufficient insulation, cold conditions in the house, and poor circulation of warm air can help contribute to exposed pipes freezing and rupturing.

Is Ice Damming a Common Concern?

Ice damming might not be as common to many homes as the threat of frozen pipes, but it is still a situation that requires preventative measures to avoid entirely. Heated cables and sufficient insulation are focal points to prevent the flood effects of ice damming.

How Can SERVPRO Help When Damage Occurs?

Experienced restoration professionals provide fast and reliable services to protect exposed properties after flooding and water damage. As rapidly as these conditions can spread, our SERVPRO team utilizes powerful extractors and drying units to make short work of the threatening effects on the property.

SERVPRO Provides Fire Damage Repair and Reconstruction Services in Jamesport

Many of our commercial clients in Jamesport have installed fire suppression systems to limit the amount of fire damage caused by fire and smoke in their building. These systems work well and often have the fire under control before the first responders arrive on the scene. The fire suppression systems may cause everything in the building to be soaked with water, and business operations must be delayed until the damage can be cleaned up and everything dried.

SERVPRO provides commercial fire damage cleanup and restoration services in Jamesport and surrounding areas. Our team can be onsite in less than four hours and begin deploying equipment and trained technicians to mitigate the damage to your building and the contents.

Further secondary damage to your contents can be caused by delaying cleanup and drying. Mold can begin to colonize in a short period, often within 24 hours to 72 of the initial exposure to high humidity or water. Porous contents and structural materials immediately start absorbing water. Drywall and flooring materials may start swelling and lose structural integrity. Once this occurs, these components and your contents usually must be removed and replaced. If our fast response team can reduce or eliminate all this additional secondary damage, your commercial business can reopen much more quickly than anticipated.

Business is Business

We understand the need to protect your inventory, whether foodstuffs, electronic equipment, office furnishings, or documents. Our goal is to greatly reduce your downtime from normal business operations and minimize any replacement items or inconveniences to your customers or clients. Our business is to keep you in business.

SERVPRO also can help with other fire-related damage:

  • Fire damage restoration
  • Smoke and odor restoration
  • Building services repair and reconstruction services

As soon as the fire department declares your commercial building safe to enter, our SERVPRO team can get to work removing excess water, installing dehumidifiers and air movers to begin the drying process. SERVPRO can also assist with the demolition of fire-damaged contents and structures to begin preparations for reconstruction.

Contaminated floodwater in your Jamesport basement requires SERVPRO's help for disinfecting and salvaging your contents

SERVPRO Delivers Flood Mitigation Services in Jamesport

Floodwaters do not care whether your home in Jamesport has a basement or a crawl space. The contaminated water can quickly fill these spaces and damage anything in them. Many people use crawl spaces to store various personal items that must be removed and recovered if possible. Dark warm spaces filled with water and moisture are prime candidates for the uncontrolled growth of mold. Mold can cause health effects, and then there are the viruses and bacteria carried into the crawl space by the floodwater.

SERVPRO provides flood damage repair and cleanup for homes in Jamesport after a storm. Regardless of the type of damage, our teams can help homeowners recover their homes, provide emergency protection for broken windows and damaged roofs, and remove debris, water, disinfect and dry your home.

Crawl spaces and basement vulnerabilities

Crawl spaces present unique challenges. They are unfinished, some with cement floors while others are earthen surfaces. They are dark and warm and the perfect breeding ground for microbes. Since the space is unfinished, many clients feel that they can leave the area to dry on its own after the water is removed.

Pumping only the water out leaves silt that is full of viruses, bacteria, and chemicals. Damp spaces like these are the perfect breeding ground for mold spores to germinate and grow into large colonies. Mold and dampness can damage the structure of your home, causing significant long-term damage.

SERVPRO can help residents clean up the space under your home, remove silt and dry it before disinfecting the entire area. We can improve the IAQ indoor air quality of the above living quarters. Our services include:

  • Basement & crawl space mold remediation
  • Floodwater cleanup in basements and crawl spaces
  • Disinfection, sanitization, and drying of the space under your home

SERVPRO inspects and can perform controlled demolitions to remove mold damage from Riverhead homes

SERVPRO Provides Mold Reduction and Control Strategies in Riverhead

Mold infestations can occur anytime there is high humidity and warmth in Riverhead homes. Whether you forgot to turn on the dehumidifier in the basement or condensation or a small water leak, moisture and high humidity levels often contribute to mold growth. Often residents first realize they have a mold problem when they notice a musty smell in their home.

SERVPRO provides almost total mold removal and mold remediation to residents of Riverhead and surrounding areas. Mold spores are everywhere, waiting for the right conditions to germinate and begin growing a colony. Mold colonies may give off a strong, musty odor which might be the first time you realize there is mold contamination in your home. Moisture, warm temperatures, and a food source are all that are needed, which exist in many homes, especially basements.

Mold can cause health effects. SERVPRO can remove mold from non-porous materials by cleaning with a damp cloth and detergent. Porous materials may require removal if they are contaminated extensively with mold. Materials such as fabrics, drywall, carpeting, and insulation must be bagged in place and carefully removed from the home.

In situations where there are severe infestations of mold, local and state laws require documentation and inspection of the affected area. SERVPRO can provide advice concerning your specific situation. We may also set up negative pressure spaces to avoid distributing mold spores to the remainder of the home during demolition and restoration.

SERVPRO provides the following services to residents of Riverhead:

  • Mold Inspections and Remediation
  • Demolition of Heavily Infested Contents and Structure
  • Application of antimicrobial agents to affected areas
  • Restoration and Replacement of Drywall, Subfloors, and Reconstruction

Extracting Water from Different Materials in Jamesport Homes

11/10/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO IICRC certified technicians have the experience and equipment for any size water damage mitigation service. Call now!

As Homes Get Built With Many Materials, Proper Extraction and Drying of Jamesport Homes Can Vary.

Initial actions can have a clear impact on the course of water removal and dry after damages. While extraction and water removal services typically are prioritized, our SERVPRO team also benefits from emergency services like:

  • Removing bulk materials
  • Assessing structural damage
  • Containing migrating water

Removing Excess Standing Water

Water damage mitigation for Jamesport homes often starts with the extraction of excess water from the property. Ultimately, there are two main ways to remove water from any building, through either extraction or evaporation. Eliminating standing water utilizes several extraction devices in our inventory, including wet vacuuming and pumping. It is also possible to drain some standing water from areas like the ceiling cavities or the HVAC system.

Removing Trapped Water in Padding and Carpets

Carpeting is among the most typical flooring installation in area homes, making it one of the priorities for restoration technicians to understand how to drive fully. Trapped moisture inside carpeted floors can lead to hazards like delamination, which destroys the flooring and requires removal and replacement. Moisture sensors can determine the extent of the damp carpet threat, but it will ultimately be carpet wands and deep extraction tools that remove moisture and protect the carpet and padding underneath.

Extracting Hardwoods in the Home

Likewise, hardwood flooring can also be a threatened area of homes and businesses. Drying mats play a considerable role in pulling out trapped moisture before it alters the physical composition of the planks. Dri-Eaz mats and similar products are placed on the seams of the flooring to pull out trapped water and prevent greater destruction.

Clearing out the damage to homes and businesses after severe water damage showcases several of our inventory's more powerful extraction devices. Our SERVPRO of The North Fork team can move quickly to help when disasters strike. Give us a call today at (631) 591-3771.

Expected Actions of Responding SERVPRO Technicians

Because fire damage in Riverhead homes can be so destructive and move so quickly, it is critical to get specific emergency services started as soon as possible. We have several unique solutions to protect your house after a fire, including:

  • Secure the Property – Our contractor license allows us to complete immediate securing actions like tarping and board-up for damaged structural areas to seal up the affected house.
  • Restore Power – Emergencies like fire loss incidents can often come with immediate effects on utilities like electricity. Getting the power back on makes restoration more efficient and can get the heat going again in colder months.
  • Check for Structural Damage – Structure fires often leave installed building materials and support for assemblies in the damage path. When these structural elements like joists and subflooring become compromised, it could be dangerous for technicians and house occupants.
  • Water Removal – Eliminating water left behind from the extinguishment process is a vital first step that we can take. Moisture can be destructive in its own right, so the situation is dire when combined with fire loss effects.
  • Restoring Heat – Cold weather can be brutal, and after a structure fire, susceptible utilities are made vulnerable to cold snaps and freezing conditions. We work to get the heat going or insulating when this is not yet possible.

Understanding the essential nature of emergency services means meeting the property's needs in the earliest possible manner. Preventing the situation from getting worse after a fire damage incident can save a customer time and money. Our SERVPRO of The North Fork team can help however you need it at (631) 591-3771.

Tools That Improve Water Restoration in Riverhead Offices

10/27/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage to your commercial building is a job for SERVPRO. We use the latest technology and equipment for every disaster.

Specific Equipment Can Have a Positive Effect on The Progress of The Restoration in Riverhead Businesses.

Water damage mitigation can be a complicated process that involves several tools and approaches. Improving the efficiency of this effort means using the right equipment for the right job. With multiple partitioned office spaces with glue-down carpeting, a few pieces of our restoration inventory stand out as preferred products for drying assemblies.

Light Wands

Water damage restoration in Riverhead businesses and office spaces relies on quick and reliable extraction solutions. While not all situations leave inches of standing water to contend with, removing moisture and trapped water from the carpeting can be a vital step towards effective recovery. Light wands work with wet vacuums or other extraction units to pull moisture from this upper layer, any padding that might be present, and prevent the impact to subflooring materials like concrete after prolonged exposure.

Air Movers

Air movers are another vital piece of equipment in our inventory that can stere the efficiency of restoration solutions. There are two main types of these drying units, centrifugal and axial. The versatility of these drying tools allows for specific practices that help evaporation, like:

  • Vapor Barrier Elimination – the main purpose of air movers is to eliminate cool air barriers that exist above wet materials as the drying process gets underway.
  • Floating – Pulling up the edges of the carpeting can allow for the floating process where centrifugal air movers blow warm air between the carbon and subflooring materials to dry the underside of the flooring.
  • Daisy-Chaining – many of our air movers are fitted with additional outlets that encourage other air movers to plugin and extend these units' reach beyond available wall outlets. Several units can be connected.

Clearing the damage to your office building requires fast action and experience. Give our SERVPRO of The North Fork team a call today at (631) 591-3771.

What Does It Take for Effective Fire Damage Restoration in Jamesport Properties?

10/16/2021 (Permalink)

Fires ravage homes within minutes. SERVPRO fire damage restoration techs will be on-site within 4 hours of the initial call.

SERVPRO Helps Address Physical Damage, Soiling, and Bad Odor During Fire Restoration

When fire ravages your Jamesport property, you may have a hard time believing that everything can get back to normal. Surfaces may be heavily soiled with soot, while structural materials and fixtures may be charred. An elaborate restoration process is necessary to eliminate the deteriorated materials, soils, and bad odor.

Your desired timelines for completion of fire damage restoration in your Jamesport property may vary depending on factors such as whether you have to seek alternative accommodation or the possibility of secondary issues worsening the damage over time. SERVPRO teams are flexible enough to accommodate any situation that you face.

Some of the steps that lead to a more accommodative restoration include:

  • Boarding up the property to secure it
  • Setting up containment barriers inside the house
  • Content pack-outs to create space for cleanup

Segmenting the fire restoration exercise helps ease the process and can even improve the outcome. In the beginning, significant tasks such as removing burned or charred materials should be prioritized, paving the way for cleanup actions. Our SERVPRO technicians remove wall panels and ceiling tiles because they are damaged or to help expose the underlying insulation, which requires replacement.

After removing damaged materials, cleaning is the other crucial stage to eliminate various soils. Our SERVPRO technicians start with dry cleaning approaches such as vacuuming or feather dusting to remove loose soils. Wet cleaning and other advanced approaches such as blast cleaning using media such as dry ice pellets, sponges, or bicarbonate powder may be necessary for severe soiling. After cleaning, deodorization is essential:

Deodorization mostly takes three stages:

What Goals Should One Set After Flood Damage in Their Jamesport Property

10/9/2021 (Permalink)

Floodwaters that are stagnant will cause contamination. SERVPRO flood damage restoration service is what you need. Call now!

SERVPRO Implements Preventive Flood Mitigation Steps to Contain Secondary Damage

Whether floodwaters accumulate while you are in the house or not, the outcome can make you feel defeated since it may seem like there is nothing you can do to contain the damage. However, flood damage can be contained in many ways minimizing its effects or even preventing it from reaching some property sections.

While it is okay to accept a certain level of flood damage in your Jamesport property, failure to take action can lead to extreme outcomes such as high restoration costs or even forcing you to abandon the house over extended periods. With assistance from SERVPRO, it is possible to achieve a couple of goals that lead to convenient recovery.

Some of the achievable flood recovery goals include:

  •   Mold prevention
  •   Limiting damage to contents
  •   Containing the spread of contaminants
  •   Controlling moisture effects

Once floodwaters breach your property, several kinds of damage start happening. While you may tend to focus on the apparent ones, such as the deep soiling of materials and surfaces, you should not forget that other less visible issues can complicate the recovery later.  Taking action early enough can contain such issues.

Floodwaters can lead to deep contamination of your property, especially if groundwater is involved. Even in cases where flooding results from a breached roof, contamination can arise from the proliferation of microbes. Our SERVPRO teams can help you deal with this in many ways, including removing the porous materials and spraying disinfectants in the water.

Exposure to moisture affects various materials causing rot, rust, swelling, mold, and many other issues. Although restoration drying can only be done after finishing other processes such as cleanup and decontamination, our SERVPRO teams can provide humidity control which limits moisture migration, saving more items.

SERVPRO of The North Fork can implement various processes that help contain flood damage. Call us at (631) 591-3771. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

What Complicates Cleanup During Water Restoration of Riverhead Properties?

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial water damage restoration is a job for SERVPRO. We have the manpower and equipment for any size disaster.

SERVPRO Scrutinizes Damaged Property to Establish Obstacles That Might Hamper Restoration

Considering how crucial water is in maintaining sanitary conditions at your workplace, you might expect a speedy conclusion to an incident whereby clean water leaks and spreads into unwanted areas of your Riverhead premises. However, you might experience challenges cleaning up and restoring your property to its preloss state, primarily if you do not involve experienced work crews.

Cleanup as part of water restoration at your Riverhead workplace can evolve from a simple extraction of water pooling on surfaces and drying of soaked materials to other complicated processes. Various obstacles can hamper what would be otherwise simple removal. One way our SERVPRO teams help is by pinpointing such obstacles early, guaranteeing convenience later on in the process.

Common issues that hinder water removal or cleanup processes include:

  • Bulky contents standing in the way
  • A significant percentage of porous and semi-porous materials at the loss site
  • Significant volumes of spilled water

Water readily spreads everywhere, including beneath bulky and heavy contents such as furniture and appliances. Removing the water trapped under such items is crucial since leaving the moisture in place can fuel mold growth or cause a foul odor. Our SERVPRO crews can readily pack out the items to pave the way for cleanup. Apart from human resources, we also have handy equipment such as dollys and heavy-duty lifting straps.

If there is a carpet or wooden floor, the spilled water seeps into the materials requiring a concerted effort to remove the water since simply wiping down the materials cannot suffice. Our SERVPRO technicians can remove the porous material for offsite drying or use advanced in-place drying approaches.

Combating large volumes of water is also possible using advanced equipment like:

SERVPRO of The North Fork aims to simplify water restoration so that you can focus on the full resumption of your daily work routines. Call us at (631) 591-3771. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Why is Fire and Smoke Removal a Difficult Job for Riverhead Residents?

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

When fire and smoke affect your home, the situation that you are left with can be messy. Contact SERVPRO for effective fire damage remediation.

SERVPRO Fire and Smoke Removal Technicians in Riverhead Undertake Significant Training to Work Effectively in Fire-damaged Homes

Fires release smoke. An indoor environment, like your home, can often sustain significant smoke soiling due to a kitchen fire. While smoke builds up quickly on cooler surfaces, removing that smoke can often be more complex and time-consuming. Most residents in the area rely on a fire restoration professional to help identify and remove smoke residues which can usually be bonded to walls or ceilings on a molecular level. Breaking these chemical bonds can be a challenge without an in-depth knowledge of smoke residues and the relevant cleaning products. SERVPRO can help with:

  • Fire debris removal
  • Smoke remediation
  • Indoor air quality restoration

Using chemicals is an essential part of fire and smoke removal for your Riverhead home. Specific chemical agents can help to break the chemical bond between soot and surface. This process makes removing the soiling much less time-consuming. There are certain essential criteria to using chemical agents. One of these criteria is working knowledge of different smoke types and the benefits of using a particular chemical.

  • Solvent-based cleaning agents are often used as part of a dry cleaning process. These can be effective on upholstery, textiles, or where there are wet smoke deposits.
  • Detergents can be mixed in a water solution and work most effectively when smoke residues are dry.
  • Dwell time is the period needed for chemical agents to take effect and break down the chemical bond between smoke and surface.

If you need help removing smoke residues from your home, contact SERVPRO of The North Fork for fire and smoke removal at (631) 591-3771.

What Chemicals Do Jamesport Residents Use for Mold Cleanup and Remediation?

9/6/2021 (Permalink)

Found or smelled mold? Team SERVPRO is ready to investigate the situation and remediate any damage. We are standing by 24/7 for your emergency call.

SERVPRO in Jamesport Use a Variety of Chemical Agents to Aid the Mold Removal Process.

Mold can quickly infest and spread through materials. Usually, the culprit behind a mold infestation is a moisture problem. Moisture can build up in certain parts of your home, providing conditions for microorganisms to grow. If you see or smell mold in your property, it is enough to justify bringing in a professional technician to help you deal with:

  • Mold assessments
  • Mold remediation
  • Mold clean up

One of the challenges to effective mold remediation in your Jamesport home is the short life cycle of fungi. A mold spore can develop into a full-sized colony and begin emitting other mold spores within seventy-two hours. These colonies have digestive enzymes that start to break down organic matter causing long-term damage. A mold remediation project can take several weeks, which means there is a risk of mold regrowth during the removal process. To stay ahead of fast-growing mold colonies, it is often vital to use chemical action that prevents mold from passing through its stages of growth.

  • Borax is a natural mold killer that is diluted with water. The advantage of using Borax is that it does not emit toxic fumes or chemicals into an indoor environment.
  • Ammonia can be used to dislodge and destroy mold growth from dense, hard surfaces like kitchen worktops, metals, and appliances.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide, also known as household bleach, is normally used to kill bacterias but is also effective as an antimicrobial chemical.

Is Wet Insulation Permanently Harmed Following Flood Damage in Riverhead?

Wet insulation after a flood can quickly turn into a mold infestation. Call SERVPRO to mitigate the situation and remediate the mold damage.

Most Insulation Requires Replacement After Flood Damage. SERVPRO in Riverhead Can Help

Bad weather conditions can lead to flooding in your home. While drying an entire property may feel overwhelming, it is vital to begin repairing the property immediately to prevent further damages. Floodwaters can affect your home through liquid moisture, vapor, or stagnation. Each of these impacts is time-related, meaning that the sooner you take action against flood intrusion, the more likely it is that you mitigate permanent damages. Professional restoration companies in the area can help you with:

  • Structural drying
  • Flood restoration
  • Vapor damage mitigation

One of the core skills for flood damage mitigation in Riverhead is structural drying. Understanding how a building functions and how airflow ventilates a residential property is essential to managing a flood restoration project. Parts of your home may have to be replaced following flood damage as they can take on permanent harm. Insulation, for example, is adversely affected by moisture which reduces its insulating capabilities. Replacing insulation is relatively inexpensive. However, insufficient insulation can lead to further condensation damages in your home.

  • Fiberglass insulation can often recover from contact with moisture. However, they must be dried using injectidry systems to avoid potentially harmful mold growth.
  • Cellulose or Rockwool insulations generally must be replaced following contact with water. This replacement is necessary because fibers can mat and reduce the effectiveness of the insulation.
  • Drying insulation can sometimes be achieved without removing walls and instead by ventilating air directly into the cavity by drilling holes beneath the baseboard.

SERVPRO wants Riverhead residents to have some information on what not to do after a fire event:

  • Never use any packaged or canned foods or beverages stored close to the fire zone.
  • Never send draperies or garments to a traditional dry cleaner as using improper cleaning methods could cause smoke odors to set
  • Never turn on your HVAC system, as it can make soot and smoke particles airborne and send them into unaffected areas of your home.
  • Never try to wipe or wash any carpeting, upholstery, or surfaces because it could make the damage worse.
  • Never turn on any appliances or lighting fixtures because wiring may have gotten damaged.

Restoring and Repairing Wall Systems in Flooded Jamesport Homes

7/5/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded? Team SERVPRO can help with water removal services. We are standing by 24/7 for your emergency call.

Flooding can cripple construction materials and require cleaning and repairs for Jamesport properties.

Wall systems are often one of the most heavily damaged areas of properties after standing water concerns persist from flooding. While flooring can take direct damage, each layer of the wall system has sensitivities to increased moisture and possible contaminants.

The Damaged Elements of a Wall System

Because flood damage in Jamesport homes can spread so fast and impact so many materials, understanding the expected results can show where controlled demolition or cleaning and restoration are the ideal approaches. Some of the affected materials include:

  • Drywall – Our technicians can use a non-penetrating moisture meter to determine if trapped moisture exists. Drywall can be restored only if no swelling or fungal growth concerns exist.
  • Wood Framing – Even with minor warping or distortion, wood framing is restorable after thorough drying.
  • Insulation – Often, the insulation itself is restorable, though damage to the backing paper might require removing and replacing this material.

Can SERVPRO Complete Repairs?

Some restoration companies require you to obtain and vet subcontractors to help in controlled demolition and reconstruction. With a general contractor license, our SERVPRO team can help in these areas during and immediately following restoration actions to clean up after the flood.

After flooding, a series of restorative actions and repairs are needed to return the property to its original condition. With certifications and licenses, we can provide comprehensive solutions to recover damaged homes after flooding. Give our SERVPRO of The North Fork team a call today at (631) 591-3771.

SERVPRO of The North Fork has the skills, manpower, and equipment to achieve better flood damage restoration results rather than DIY methods alone. If you need a crew to get started with water removal services, call us at (631) 591-3771.

How Essential Is Fire Damage Restoration In Riverhead Homes With Heavy Soot?

5/12/2021 (Permalink)

When your property is affected by fire damage, you need expert help. Team SERVPRO is standing by with the equipment and the experience to help.

SERVPRO Handles Smoke Damage in Riverhead Properties Seriously to Prevent Health or Structural Issues

In the aftermath of a fire, most people focus on the deterioration of materials from the effects of the flames and heat. However, smoke damage can also be dangerous. The combustion process produces a combination of fine residues and dangerous chemicals which adhere to surfaces. Without proper restoration procedures, such materials can pose health risks to the occupants.

Incorporating smoke residue management into the fire damage restoration efforts in Riverhead helps prevent many future problems. For instance, soot has corrosive properties that can ruin finishes or damage metallic items through rusting.

Apart from affecting the structure, light smoke residues left within the structure can escape into the air and, if breathed in, can cause respiratory issues. The best way to prevent such outcomes is to clean the property thoroughly. Our SERVPRO technicians use various approaches to capture the residues, including cleaning surfaces with chemical sponges and vacuuming soiled areas. We also open up assemblies such as cabinets and walls to reach all hidden residues when performing:

  • Fire restoration
  • House fire clean up
  • Water & fire damage restorations

SERVPRO of The North Fork handles fire damage restoration exhaustively. Call us at (631) 591-3771.

Can Cleanup Address Flood Damage in Mattituck Homes Effectively?

4/30/2021 (Permalink)

Does flooding have your property under inches of water? Have no fear, team SERVPRO can certainly help. Call right away for best results.

SERVPRO Uses Advanced Equipment and Cleaning Agents during Water Clean Up In Mattituck

When you glance at a map of Mattituck, the most outstanding feature is the Mattituck inlet, a major waterway that almost splits the hamlet in half and connects to the Long Island Sound. The water body is a combination of different waterways and creeks. It was dredged and usually serves people taking boat rides for pleasure. There are several other water bodies in Mattituck, including James Creek and Horton Creek, so the risk of flood damage to homes in the area is heightened.

The Heart of Wine Country

Mattituck is located in the heart of over 30 vineyards which form part of the Long Island wine region. The most notable ones include:

  • Macari vineyards
  • Rosehill vineyards and Inn
  • Harbes family farm
  • Laurel lake vineyards

At the vineyards, people have the chance to sample various local wines and tasty foods. Spending time at a vineyard also provides a great environment for relaxation.

Mattituck also hosts an annual strawberry festival on Father’s Day weekend. The event that runs for four days is billed as the Granddaddy of all berry festivals and draws people mostly from the surrounding rural farmlands. It features various entertaining activities, including games, rides, and performances. A queen of the Strawberry Fair is also crowned.

Historical Significance

Mattituck was part of the land owned by Corchaug Indians, then sold to a governor of New Haven at the time, Theophilus Eaton. English colonists settled in the area in 1662 and pursued agriculture and trade development. During the revolutionary wars, it was occupied by British troops. A visit to some of the museums in the area illuminates the history of the area better.

  • Hallockville Museum Farm

The farm was created to preserve the farming history of the North Fork of Long Island. The main feature is the Hallock homestead built by Ruben Brown in 1775. The facility holds several animals and antique farm equipment.

  • Mattituck Historical Society

The facility located at 18200 Main Road was established in the late 1960s to educate the community about the diverse history and heritage of the area. It maintains several museum complexes and archives offering programs of interest and exhibits to people of all ages.

What Makes Cleanup by SERVPRO after Flood Damage in Mattituck Better?

Flooding can leave your home looking like a dumpsite because of the soiling on surfaces and debris from damaged walls or ceiling materials. In addition to the visible issues, there is deep contamination.

When addressing flood damage cases in Mattituck, SERVPRO deploys all the resources needed to clean up the property restoring it to its preloss state. Our technicians have a deeper understanding of chemical agents and use different types to ensure proper control of contaminants. For instance, when applying antimicrobial products, we consider whether they are disinfectants, sterilizers, or sanitizers. Sanitizers reduce microorganisms while disinfectants destroy up to 99% of the organisms they contact.

The results from a water cleanup exercise may also differ depending on the equipment used. Our SERVPRO technicians use powerful equipment such as rotating brushes or power washers to remove all soils from surfaces, thus making them ideal for:

  • Cleaning Up after a sewer backup
  • Sewage cleanup
  • Flood restoration

SERVPRO of The North Fork can clean up any property after flood damage. Call us at (631) 591-3771.

Is Hardwood Furniture Saveable with Fire Damage Restoration in Riverhead?

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

Has fire residue affected your home? Call SERVPRO to put together a custom fire damage remediation plan fit for your particular situation.

SERVPRO Has Specialist Fire Damage Restoration Procedures for Residents of Riverhead

Hardwoods can be challenging to clean as they often have a lacquer or finish, which can affect their ability to counteract heat or smoke damages. Unfinished furniture can often respond poorly to solvents or other cleaning products, which, without careful pre-testing, can lead to staining or water absorption.

When carrying out fire damage restoration in your Riverhead home, technicians pay special attention to hardwood furnishings. In some cases, the extent of the damage may be too severe for cleaning-based repair. These situations may be apparent when there are signs of blistering on the wood or extensive staining. SERVPRO can refinish hardwoods to return them to a preloss condition.

  • The wood creme paste is a solvent cleaner that can remove cosmetic layers of finish with stains.
  • We use extra-fine steel wool to avoid damage to wood surfaces when agitating stains or smoke residues.
  • Semi-refinishing woods can help to remove water-marks or discoloration.

Hardwoods can often be restored to a preloss condition with the correct treatment. Contact SERVPRO of The North Fork for fire damage restoration at (631) 591-3771.

Do I Need Ceiling Repairs from Water Damage?

4/2/2021 (Permalink)

Regardless whether it’s the ceiling or floors affected, team SERVPRO is ready to remediate the water damage in your home.

SERVPRO Technicians in Riverhead Can Accurately Assess Your Water Removal Needs

Water can affect ceilings in a structure in two ways. The first is direct liquid exposure, which can occur when wet rooms such as bathrooms are the source of water damage and water migrates through the subfloor affecting the ceiling below. Vapor damage can also adversely affect your home's ceilings, which occurs as a result of high humidity levels.

The process of water removal in your Riverhead home relies on combating both liquid water and vapor. The water evaporation can lead to high humidity levels, which, in turn, could cause cracking, discoloration, or weakening of ceilings. Addressing these issues correctly can mitigate more expensive losses like ceiling repair or replacement.

  • We can set up a balanced drying system of dehumidifiers and air movers.
  • Our technicians have an expert understanding of how materials respond to water exposure.
  • Drying apparatus can be run from portable generators, and crew chiefs can calculate utility expenses.

Address ceiling issues before they become a costly source of damage. Contact SERVPRO of The North Fork for water removal at (631) 591-3771.

Jamesport is a township and hamlet on New York State's Long Island. The southern beaches of Jamesport face the Atlantic Ocean, while a short trip west opens up the beaches along the Long Island Sound. Like many townships on Long Island, the township of Jamesport is a residential area that still offers visitors a chance to soak up cultural events, festivals, and nightlife. Among its highlights include trails and hikes that transport you across the Long Island Beaches and protected wildlife and fisheries sites. The local economy is primarily in services that offer numerous craft breweries, wineries, and boating trips around the island.

The township of Jamesport has a close-knit collection of permanent residents numbering some 1,500 people. However, the summer months often see significant population growth as tourists from neighboring New York City seek out the south shore beaches. These sites include the Great Peconic Bay. To cater to the bustling tourist trade, Jamesport has many local farmhouses and group walks, such as the Spring Fling, which runs annually. Wine tasting-tours are among the popular tourist activities that take residents along the southern coast of Long Island and allow guests to sample some excellent local produce. Live music venues celebrate some of Long Island's diverse cultural heritage, which includes a bustling Irish population.

  • The Great Peconic Bay straddles the north and south forks of Long Island. The idyllic beaches on the southern shore were once a key fishing center for clams, oysters, and shellfish, which has led to some excellent seafront restaurants.
  • Sailing, Kayaking, and Yachting are among some of the popular tourist attractions at Jamesport township. The moderate climate and calm waters make this small township ideal for beginners or those looking for a relaxing exploration of the surrounding islands.
  • During the fall, Jamesport is famous for pumpkin picking and wine season, attracting many visitors from the surrounding hamlets and larger cities. The Jamesport State Park is one of the area's more popular locations for fruit and veg picking.

How Essential Is the Choice of Drying Method during Water Mitigation?

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

When water damage occurs you need the help of a team of professionals. SERVPRO techs are ready 24/7 365 days a year for a water restoration service.

SERVPRO Helps Ensure Balanced Drying in Jamesport Properties after Water Damage

One of the major problems of water intrusion is spreading moisture in many parts of the structure, leaving contents and materials wet. Therefore, drying is a crucial aspect in the restoration of such property to its preloss state. Although materials dry naturally if given sufficient time and kept from further moisture exposure, intervention is usually necessary when restoring water-damaged properties.

The drying done as part of water mitigation in Jamesport properties must expedite results to prevent secondary issues such as mold development, which can happen in as little as 48 hours. Drying relies on three main factors:

The drying method chosen must adjust these factors to optimum levels for a positive outcome. SERVPRO utilizes a closed or semi-closed system that seals off the affected area from the outdoor environment. We then use air movers to improve air movements within the wet areas, thus improving evaporation. We also set up dehumidifiers to extract moisture from the air. Dehumidifiers also exhaust hot air back into the wet areas, which further improves evaporation.

Assistance from SERVPRO of The North Fork can help dry your property faster. Call us at (631) 591-3771 for any water mitigation services.

Can Restoration Processes Worsen Fire Damage?

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

Fire damage restoration should be handled by a team of professionals. SERVPRO techs are experienced and trained for any size job you need done.

For Safe Restoration of Your Riverhead Home Call SERVPRO

The effects of flames, heat, and smoke from a fire are detrimental to a structure and its contents. However, restoration processes can also cause damages if used incorrectly.  For instance, wet cleaning is an effective way to remove smoke residues, but saturation can cause materials to crumble or set residues leading to staining.

When SERVPRO embarks on fire damage restoration in Riverhead properties, we use alternative cleaning approaches if we determine wet cleaning can cause damages. Dry cleaning is one viable option, although we can also use specialized methods such as soda or dry ice blasting. Dry cleaning involves various things, including:

  • Dry sponge cleaning
  • Brushing
  • Vacuuming
  • Compressed air cleaning

Even after choosing a dry-cleaning approach, our SERVPRO technicians are IICRC certified and take additional steps to protect the property from further damages. For instance, we lay canvas or other protective material over the furniture when cleaning walls with sponges since the rubber crumbles into minute pieces, which can soil the furniture unnecessarily.

SERVPRO of The North Fork addresses any challenging aspects when restoring fire damage. Call us at (631) 591-3771 if you need assistance.

SERVPRO Has Resources to Match the Restoration Needs in Any Riverhead Property

New York State has approximately 7.2 million acres of agricultural land spread out over its different boroughs. Long Island has 35000 acres, 20000 of which lie in Riverhead town. It was named Riverhead since it is situated at the mouth of the Peconic River. The smaller Riverhead hamlet lies within the town and serves as its economic center.

The town was established in 1792 as part of the new jurisdictions created after the American Revolution. Initially, it was part of Southold Town. Then residents petitioned for a split, arguing that the town was so long that people from the western sections had a hard time attending town meetings or transacting other businesses.  A legislation bill was passed on March 13 1792, actualizing the split.

Fascinating Places to Visit

The diverse history of Long Island, from the agrarian to colonial days and real estate changes, gave it a rich heritage. Riverhead visitors can get a taste of what the town has to offer in different locations, including:

  • The Railroad Museum of Long Island displays various artifacts, including engines and coaches that tell the local railway history.

Unique Architectural Home Designs in Riverhead

There is a variety of home designs in Riverhead, just like other parts of Long Island. The area offers a suburban-rural mix experience, and over 70% of the residents own their homes. Some of the typical home styles in the area include:

  • Cape homes

These are English-styled homes are usually one story featuring steep roofs and massive central chimneys. The design was developed to withstand heavy rain or snow. Cape homes are simple, mostly rectangular, and symmetric in design.

  • Colonial style

The formal style features several variations. However, some unique aspects readily identify such homes. For instance, colonial-style homes have formally defined dining and living rooms. Bedrooms are normally situated on the second floor.  They are also very symmetrical with proportional windows and centered front doors.

  • Ranch Homes

They feature open floor plans that offer easy access to the outside. Ranch homes also feature attached garages, with the main focus being practicality. The homes have either single or double floor living.

How SERVPRO’s Water Restoration Expertise Help Save Old Homes

Severe water spills or other intrusions in older homes are challenging to address, unlike losses affecting newer homes. For instance, many of the structural materials may not be readily available or cost more, so actions such as immediate teardown of any wet material may not be a viable approach.

When SERVPRO embarks on restoring an older home affected by water intrusion, we can deliver better outcomes because we have IICRC certified technicians. We have superior equipment that lightens the workload:

  • Using non-penetrative moisture testers ensures we do not add new damages
  • Using thermal cameras and thermo-hygrometers helps us troubleshoot moisture issues faster
  • We have different versions of drying equipment like dehumidifiers ensuring we utilize the best

SERVPRO of The North Fork is fully committed to delivering quality water restoration to Riverhead residents. Call us at (631) 591-3771.

How Essential Is the Choice of Drying Method during Water Mitigation?

2/25/2021 (Permalink)

When water damage occurs you need the right company for the job. SERVPRO has the manpower and experience for any size water restoration service job.

  • Air movements
  • Dehumidification
  • Temperature

The drying method chosen must adjust these factors to optimum levels for a positive outcome. SERVPRO utilizes a closed or semi-closed system that seals off the affected area from the outdoor environment. We then use air movers to improve air movements within the wet areas, thus improving evaporation. We also set up dehumidifiers to extract moisture from the air. Dehumidifiers also exhaust hot air back into the wet areas, which further improves evaporation.

Assistance from SERVPRO of The North Fork can help dry your property faster. Call us at (631) 591-3771 for any water mitigation services.

Being on the North Shore of Long Island, Riverhead is a community that has dealt with a fair share of humid conditions and groundwater threats resulting in mold development. With a town that has such a long-standing history dating back to the early 1700s, there are many properties and landmarks worth protecting when these disasters occur. With this settlement existing long before the American Revolution, several of its structures would be influential in housing prominent members of the Continental Army in their effort to win America's independence.

A Colonial Community Still Thriving

Despite the history of the town and its role in prominent eras of history, modern Riverhead has many attractions and desirable features. Long Island is a bustling portion of New York, which can undoubtedly be seen in the pace and continual growth of this city.

Historic Districts and Properties of Riverhead

As this is one of the state's older communities, it has many historic properties and landmarks worth protecting for the future. The care and consideration of these structures require unique restoration or cleaning when disasters occur. There are hundreds of homes or buildings dating back to the 1700s throughout multiple areas of Riverhead and its surrounding region. Some of the most prominent districts featuring these structures that promote older architectural styles and colonial life include:

  • Riverhead Main Street Historic District
  • Second and Ostrander Historic District
  • Suffolk County Historical Society Building

The Suffolk County Historical Society Museum

This is a structure specifically designed to preserve the historical artifacts and stories of Suffolk County. This building used as the museum was constructed in 1930, though the Historical Society has been operating to protect the county's interests since 1886. A library in this location boasts more than 20,000 volumes and 840 cubic feet of manuscripts detailing personal diaries, journals, newspapers, and other paperwork. Today, this is a preservation site for the county and a standing showcase of colonial revival architecture.

Don’t Let Water Damage Ruin Your Riverhead Home--Call SERVPRO!

Looking at the quiet and comfortable houses of Riverhead, it can be easy to forget how people used to live in our state. When immigrants first arrived in the USA, most of them came to New York City, and the swelling population led to some terrible living conditions. To show people today about the struggles faced by lower-class families in those times, the New York Tenement Museum plans to host a virtual tour on the evening of January 28.

The tour focuses on a modern-day recreation of a tenement apartment, complete with worn-out and cheap household fixtures common a century ago. The museum curators will also provide commentary about the living conditions of the day, the types and qualities of amenities available to low-income families, and the sacrifices that they had to make. Space in this virtual event is limited, so potential guests are encouraged to email the Mattituck Laurel Library to reserve a spot.

Taking a Closer Look at Jamesport’s Number One Resource: The Sea

Two Marine Industries that Helped Create the Jamesport of Today

Like many coastal communities, Jamesport can trace its roots to fishers, who were drawn to the waters for their steady food supply and natural beauty. Today, that tradition continues, with most of the local fish industry concentrated in two areas. Between scallops and menhaden, the sea defines our history and continues to provide for us today.

Scallop fishing may be traced back to the earliest days of Jamesport. In the 17th century, the value and taste of the scallop had already been long established. Our earliest residents made comfortable livings by selling their harvests in the larger markets of the New York colony, often purchasing food rather than relying on their catches. Scallops then were as much a delicacy as they are now because, unlike other mollusks, a scallop can swim away. Without special nets and fishing techniques, a scallop can escape even the most experienced fisherman, leading to their relative scarcity. Today, the industry remains strong but may soon be threatened by decades of accumulating pollutants in our coastal waters. Doing your part to reduce runoff and properly dispose of garbage can help to keep this industry alive for decades to come.

More recently, our fishing industry diversified as demand for menhaden increased. Unlike most wild fish, menhaden are not suitable to eat, mostly due to their unusual plankton diet (most fish eat algae, seaweed, or other animals). Because of this, they received little attention for most of Jamesport's history. In the 20th century, with an increased national focus on nutrition, the menhaden was revealed to be an excellent source of fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids. Demand for these fish exploded, and with a sizable native population, Jamesport became a vital place to harvest them. Overfishing threatens the menhaden population today, but with the development of several large fish farming operations along the Atlantic coast, their numbers are expected to rebound with ease.

Together, these species form the bulk of our fishing industry, but individual boats still specialize in other seafood. Out on the waters, you may spot crabbing boats, mussel and oyster collectors, and some vessels that take anything they can catch. However, these familiar sights might not last forever. Please do your part to reduce pollution and litter so that local fishing boats can continue to practice their trade as they have for centuries.

The Peconic Bay is a World-Class Boating Spot, Right in the Jamesport Backyard

Did you know that watercraft enthusiasts come from hundreds of miles to enjoy the waters right next to our town of Jamesport? The Peconic Bay, along with several areas surrounding it, is known worldwide as one of the best recreational sailing locations. For centuries, it has been considered a jewel of the region, with abundant sea life, pleasant sailing conditions, and enough room for many people to enjoy the Bay at once. Whether you own a grand boat or a simple kayak, these luxurious waters have something for everyone.

Despite its relatively large breadth, the Great Peconic Bay rarely reaches a depth of more than 30 feet. This consistent characteristic creates a broad bay of smooth, gentle water while still being deep enough for small to medium vessels to sail with ease. Many avid kayakers and canoers cruise from end to end, undisturbed by the calm waves. In addition to creating a perfect surface to sail on, the shallow Bay also hosts some of the most diverse marine life in the area. With plenty of sunlight reaching the ocean floor, many seaweed and algae species can thrive, allowing animals of all sorts to flourish. While the populations of specific species may vary each season, the Bay is generally known to be an excellent spot for small-scale, non-commercial fishing.

Many local companies offer kayaks, jet skis, and larger boats for rent if you lack any watercraft of your own. The Bay may be accessed year-round, but the weather is typically best from April through November, especially for smaller watercraft. If you are not familiar with the area's fishing regulations and restrictions, make sure to

How to Stay Safe During Jamesport Fire Damage Restoration

Even under the watchful eyes of trained professionals, many hazards may still lurk in a home in Jamesport undergoing fire damage restorations. We take many safety precautions during any restoration project, but we strongly recommend that you exercise caution while moving in and around any affected areas. Keeping these safety tips in mind can protect you and your family while our crews do their work.

Avoid Machinery and Equipment

Depending on the project's scope, SERVPRO may use some powerful machinery to mitigate and reverse damages incurred during the fire. These machines can be dangerous to people who are not trained in using them, and you should do your best to avoid them. Actions as simple as moving the equipment could cause harm to you or interrupt the restoration process. Sometimes, our technicians place these devices in inopportune locations without realizing it. If that happens, politely ask one of our employees to move it for you, and they will be happy to do so if at all possible.

Do Not Walk Under Damaged Ceilings

Many house fires cause significant damage to ceiling materials and materials above them, such as water lines. Although rare, some dangerous situations can result from these damages. For example, a section of the ceiling may appear stable during our inspections but later fall during our restoration work. Because these risks exist, we ask our clients to avoid walking under ceilings overhead fixtures that have been touched by fire damage. If the burn reaches an unavoidable area such as a hallway, ask your SERVPRO inspector whether it is safe to pass underneath. In some cases, we may erect temporary support structures to ensure your safety as you move about the building.

Change Your HVAC Filters

We strongly recommend that you replace your HVAC filters after any house fire. In addition to stopping the spread of damage around the home, replacing your filters can also keep you safe. If smoke and ash circulate throughout your home, they can become part of the air you breathe. Our technicians are also trained to clean out HVAC systems and can assist you with any tasks you may wish to perform.

SERVPRO of The North Fork stays ready 24/7 to respond to local calls for help with fire damage restoration. Call us as soon as possible after a disaster at (631) 591-3771.

Enjoy Life in Riverhead and Celebrate the Beauty of its Surroundings

The Peconic River hosts Riverhead in Suffolk County, New York. Northeast of New York City and accessible via ferry from Connecticut, the town serves as the home of a large cohort of Polish immigrants and their families. Mostly agricultural, Riverhead also features beaches where avid boaters and fishermen can gain access year-round.

The history of Riverhead is rich and reflects the growth of our nation. European settlers purchased the area from Native Americans in 1649, and more was added with the purchase of land from Col. William Smith. The town of Riverhead became a reality in 1792 within the context of the American Revolution. It is the county seat of Suffolk County, and most of its footprint is on water. The Long Island Railroad serves as does Suffolk County Transit and the Hampton Jitney.

This picturesque small town lets you travel back in history as you visit its downtown and historical sites. The Hallockville Museum Farm, for example, is a non-profit organization listed on the National Register of Historic Places committed to take visitors back to Long Island’s farming roots and project them onto our lives today. The Hallock family occupied the homestead for most of the 1800s until 1979 when Ella Hallock moved out at age 95. It is precisely along Sound Avenue that Eastern European immigrants settled and became an active part of the community.

The Polish Town Street Fair and Festival began in 1975 as a fundraiser for the Polish Town Civic Association. Although it was canceled in 2020, Riverhead residents and its neighboring towns look forward to polka music and pierogies each August. They also look forward to crowning a Miss Polish Town USA each year. Heritage is not the only thing the town celebrates. Also a yearly tradition in June, the Mattituck Lions Club celebrates an annual Strawberry Festival, which serves as a fundraiser and congregates vendors, live entertainment, and the traditional strawberry shortcake eating contest. The Festival’s grand finale is a firework show late into the night. Proceeds from the Festival aid organizations such as the Boy Scouts, the Peconic Bay Medical Center, the Mattituck Jazz Band, and several educational initiatives.

Not far from Riverhead, its residents can enjoy the yearly Greenport Dances in the Park series.

Also canceled in 2020, it is due to return in 2021 for hours of fun and dancing for young and old alike. Typically held most Mondays during the summer, each music performance is designed to bring enjoyment to its spectators and get them on their feet dancing in no time! Concerts are held at Mitchell Park, and patrons are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket or chairs along with snacks.

Now that the weather is turning colder, and the health crisis has limited some of the events we traditionally celebrate, we should be thankful that the Long Island Aquarium, right here on Riverhead, is open! Indoor and outdoor exhibits make this an ideal attraction for those craving learning and entertaining. Although many programs occur throughout the day, visitors can also explore at their leisure and learn about animals in the Amazon Rainforest, turtles, and seahorses. Some new guidelines are in place. The facility is operating at a limited capacity, but making a reservation online is simple to do, and the staff is ready to welcome you in a safe environment.

Fishing in Riverhead

The Peconic River is excellent for fishing whether you venture out in a boat or choose to fish from the dock. After recent renovations, the town’s marina offers picnic tables and a great space for families to enjoy time together. Here’s what to expect when fishing in our town-

  • You can charter a boat at the dock and traverse the Peconic River
  • Be on the lookout for the Annual Snapper Tournament after Labor Day and get the whole family involved in it.
  • Fishing in Riverhead can provide an excellent tableau to learn about conservation and the environment by practicing catch and release and tag and release.
  • The River is calm even when the weather is rough, allowing avid anglers to enjoy fishing despite most weather events.

Those visitors and residents who find themselves in need of the intensity of a big city can venture to New York City for an escapade. By hopping on the Long Island Railroad or in your car, you can arrive in the heart of Manhattan for a day of enjoyment. Alternatively, you can head up to Connecticut by driving over to the Orient Point ferry station, taking the scenic boat ride into New London, and traversing the beautiful landscapes through the state and into its northern neighbors. Some claim this is the easiest way to go from deep within Long Island to Boston.

Protecting Your Riverhead Home

As weather events seem to represent a risk year-round for Riverhead homes, homeowners need to be mindful of how restoration services can help mitigate their losses. A strong storm may be the catalyst for water to come through a window or roof, just like it can cause floodwater to enter your home. Whatever the consequence, SERVPRO is here to help.

Not all disasters come from Mother Nature, though, and fire damage can be caused by ourselves. A kitchen fire, a space heater, or an aromatic candle can be the culprit of flames in your home and the ensuing smoke and soot. Enlisting a professional team such as ours helps the restoration process be more efficient and thorough. In the course of our work, we address the tangible and intangible remnants of a home fire, including the acrid smell it leaves behind.

SERVPRO of The North Fork is available 24/7 to tend to your emergency, and we do so with the latest in technology. Call us at (631) 591-3771 as soon as you detect the issue, and let us do what we do best. With our assistance, your home will look and feel, “Like it never even happened.”

Why is it Essential that Flood Damage Teams in Jamesport Understand Building and Material Science?

10/31/2020 (Permalink)

If your historic home suffers from flood damage, time is of the essence. Contact Team SERVPRO for effective water removal services.

Jamesport Residents Need Flood Damage Control that suits Their Homes

Jamesport is a small, quaint hamlet with a variety of exciting and historic homes. Residents love how much character the area has, and of course, they want to preserve the character of their homes in the event of a disaster.

Flood damage in Jamesport can cause many problems:

  • Soaked carpets and drapes
  • Warped wooden floors or furniture
  • Structural damage to insulation, drywall, or door and window frames
  • Unsanitary conditions if the floodwater is contaminated

Floods also increase the risk of mold growth in your home by providing the moisture that spores need to propagate. If you do not get help quickly, you could be left with irreparable items and an unpleasant damp smell.

Thankfully, SERVPRO of The North Fork is available 24 hours. We're Faster to Any Size Disaster – you can expect a visit within four hours of contacting us.

What is building and material science?

In the restoration industry, building and material science refers to understanding different building types and building materials, and how to dry them.

A thorough understanding of different construction materials is the foundation of flood damage restoration in Jamesport. That is why SERVPRO trains all of its staff to the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards. IICRC training means our technicians understand how to work with different materials and create a drying plan that is unique to each dwelling.

Why is building and material science important in flood remediation?

Knowledge of building and material science helps our technicians to:

  • Carry out accurate moisture inspection
  • Correctly identify the materials present in your home
  • Correctly identify the assembly of each component
  • Draw up a detailed drying plan

Knowing about building and material science makes it easier to anticipate challenges and take steps to mitigate them before they become an issue. It also allows us to calculate how to dry your home and which equipment is best to use. This is especially important in an area like the North Fork, where there are so many historic and unique houses.

What is a building envelope and why does it matter?

The building envelope means everything that separates the inside of your home from the outside. It includes exterior walls, the roof, ceilings, finished floors, windows and doors, and the foundation. Homes are not completely airtight. The IICRC ranks houses according to how well the building envelopes prevents external conditions from influencing inside conditions:

  • A tight envelope means we can control drying conditions without significant effects from outside
  • A moderate envelope means that the outside conditions will moderately impact drying conditions
  • A loose envelope means that the conditions outside will significantly impact the conditions inside

To determine where your home falls on this scale, we will consider its age, its construction, the condition of windows and doors, whether there is any damage to the roof, and other details.

Understanding the building envelope makes it easier for us to determine the correct placement of air movers, fans, and dehumidifiers while we dry your home.

What are mechanical systems and why do they matter?

Mechanical systems sound fancy, but it just refers to plumbing, air, and heating. Examples of mechanical systems include plumbing, the HVAC, exhaust vents, electrical points, and fireplaces. Awareness of these systems is critical when drying after flood damage because they can affect a room's air pressure and temperature.

For example, if flood water damages your bathroom, and SERVPRO wants to set up a drying system, we must be aware of the bathroom vents and fan. Vents and fans can allow air to escape, creating a negative air situation. Air will rush in to replace the air that went out. If the incoming air is colder or damper than the escaping air, that can affect our drying system, and we must adjust accordingly.

Why must SERVPRO technicians understand the movement of air, heat, and water?

The design of your home can impact the way air, heat, and water move through it. For example, as well as known air entry and escape points, like doors, there may be cracks in masonry. We know that hot air always moves towards cold air, which means hot air will flow towards the outside in the winter. Air and temperature can also be affected if you turn on your HVAC or bathroom exhaust fan while we are working.

Water can move as liquid along surfaces, as vapor, or by materials wicking moisture from the air. Our technicians can trace the movement using moisture meters and probes, and we can measure humidity during drying.

A thorough understanding of building and material science means SERVPRO can remedy water damage more quickly and efficiently, so you can get on with your life.

Appliances exist throughout your Riverhead home. These may include dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, and trash compactors. Sometimes, devices are fitted into cabinets or wall spaces, making sourcing an appropriate replacement time-consuming. Equally, most appliances are resilient to fire due to their metal construction. We often find that a restoration project can be made quicker and cost-efficient by cleaning or restoration machines rather than replacement. The primary methods for content restoration are wet cleaning and polishing.

What cleaning products work on appliances?

  • Most appliances use non-absorbent materials like metal and plastic, so they can be cleaned using water-based detergent.
  • Heavy smoke residues are removable using high alkalinity products to address pH balance.
  • Aggressive cleaning using industrial cleaners or wood creme paste to polish and buffer the surface of the appliance.

Are electrical components checked during appliance restoration?

Home appliances are full of moving parts, and each one is susceptible to fire damage in your Riverhead home. SERVPRO technicians take care to disconnect devices when performing the cleaning to mitigate potential losses. Once the cleaning process is complete, we can arrange for an electronic service technician (EST) to inspect the appliance's mechanical aspects. By using an EST, we can provide you with a confirmation that your appliances are in working condition and safe to operate after a property fire.

What are the essential tips for cleaning smoke residues from appliances?

  • Begin by using a duster, feather cloth, or light-vacuum to remove loose dry soots from the surface.
  • Use a wall rinse after cleaning the surface to prevent streaking or other markings.
  • Glass cleaners can be ideal for leaving a professional, polished finish to the appliance surface.

Appliances can often be restored to a high-quality condition with the right knowledge and equipment. Contact SERVPRO of The North Fork at (631) 591-3771.

Water Damage In Jamestown

Many Jamestown homes experience damage from water entering their homes every year. Water leaks, broken windows and doors, and more cause thousands of dollars in damage. Water can spread across floors, soaking carpets, seeping under baseboards, and entering cavities inside walls and under cupboards. There are short term and potential long term impacts of water in your home.

The SERVPRO team has over 30 years of experience in water mitigation in Jamestown and surrounding areas. We have seen the effects of not reacting quickly to water inside homes. Everything from soaked and damaged carpets must be replaced, to mold growth inside walls and even structural damage to cabinets and wall materials.

• Carpet fibers can separate from the backing causing permeant damage.
• Mold colonies begin to grow within 24 to 48 hours
• Particleboard, a common material used for cabinets, absorbs water, swells, and disintegrates

A fast response by our SERVPRO team can mitigate much of this damage.

What are the Steps Homeowners Should Take Immediately?
The amount of water inside your home should determine the response homeowners need to consider. One of the most important is to remain safe and avoid accidents caused by slips and falls or electrical hazards. Homeowners should consider the following in their response:

• If possible, stop the source of water in your home
• Check safety issues, especially electrical hazards.
• Turn off the power to the area of your home that is affected.
• Call your insurance company and call SERVPRO for assistance
• Mop up access water
• Remove objects from the floor that could be damaged, including anything that could bleed color onto the flooring
• Follow the recommendations of your insurance adjuster and the SERVPRO team to mitigate additional water damage.

Many homeowners incur thousands of dollars in additional damage by not following and acting immediately to mitigate the damage water can cause. Fast and safe action can reduce the damage done to your possessions, especially valued family heirlooms.

How Do Owners Restore Their Jamesport Businesses After a Water Intrusion?

9/15/2020 (Permalink)

To get started restoring any business facility here or in Riverhead, call SERVPRO of The North Fork today at (631) 591-3771.

For Complete Restoration, Jamesport Business Owners Call SERVPRO

What Is Needed Besides Removing Water to Restore a Business?
Most Jamesport businesses are not industrial operations, so the restoration of the structure and office furniture or appliances is needed to provide a clean, safe environment for returning customers, as well as employees. SERVPRO restoration specialists understand that removing standing water is not enough if there is moisture behind furniture, pooling in corners, under counters, and even dripping down walls.

What Happens After Removing the Standing Water?
For complete commercial water restoration in Jamesport businesses such as coffee shops, our specialists increase air circulation and evaporation with several key pieces of equipment:

    •    Fans – After setting these up at entrances and exits, specialists can draw out damp air from inside the shop and force it outside.
    •    Air Movers – Personnel, use these to generate a flow of warm air that carefully dries everything from tables and chairs to the underside of counters, appliances, and everything else that cannot be moved or easily shifted around. By adjusting the speed and heat of the airflow, specialists can also use them on drywall and ceiling tiles if the leak came from an overhead pipe.
    •    Long-Handled Squeegees – They may be low-tech, but these tools are still the best choice for drawing water out of corners and from under refrigerators and ovens.

Is Cleaning Needed in This Situation?
Yes. There are no contaminants with a water leak as there would be with outside flooding, but there is still the dirt and other debris that accumulate in any food-service operation. Specialists use a commercial-grade cleaner to finish the job and also include an anti-bacterial agent if needed.

To get started restoring any business facility here or in Riverhead, call SERVPRO of The North Fork today at (631) 591-3771. We are here to make your water intrusion, “Like it never even happened.”

Can I Retrieve my Jewelry, Computer, and Heirlooms?

Floodwaters can damage your Jamesport home in a matter of minutes. We can help verify your home is safe to enter, retrieve a variety of items, assess their cleanliness, and clean them if needed. Our technicians maintain an inventory of all items removed by our team and the homeowner for safekeeping. The inventory list, which notes the condition of each piece, is used for insurance purposes.

I Have Insurance, How Can I Make a Detailed Claim?

SERVPRO specializes in cleaning and restoring homes and businesses after floodwaters have inundated neighborhoods. We maintain detailed records of all damage, any contents that cannot be cleaned, and those that can be returned to their preloss condition.

How Long Will It Take to Clean My Interior After a Fire in Riverhead?

8/29/2020 (Permalink)

We have advanced equipment and technology to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

SERVPRO Works Quickly to Address Fire Damage So That Your Riverhead Interior is Back to Normal As Soon As Possible

It is natural to want to speed up the process when cleaning up your Riverhead home after a fire. However, each incident that SERVPRO gets called to is unique and poses its own set of challenges. We take each restoration project and treat them with care to provide you with the fastest, yet most precise results possible. Whenever you have been through a fire event in your home, you can count on us to be by your side within hours. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster, and our team understands how important it is for your Riverhead home to get back to normal.

How Does the Cleanup Begin?
Even if it is just hours after the initial fire damage in Riverhead, the damage will begin multiplying due to corrosive actions from soot and smoke residue throughout the affected space. Once you call us and the first responders on the scene approve entry, our crew chief begins the initial assessment. During this walkthrough, areas of damage get noted so that we may select the best tools and processes to provide the best results.

Once the fire assessment is complete, and the right equipment gets assembled, the work begins. Some of the steps that usually occur next will include:

    •    Cleaning various structures – This consists of the walls, ceilings, floors, and other surfaces
    •    Contents cleaning – Our skilled technicians inspect each item to determine the potential for full restoration and what must be disposed of.
    •    Odor removal – Instead of merely masking odors like traditional DIY cleaning methods, our team has the specially formulated sanitizers and solvent deodorizers to get the job done.

What if There are Tough Odors?
During the cleanup's initial phases, we remove a wide variety of materials that present with heavy soot and smoke residue. This is because any scorched materials will generate odors, and removing them will also remove odor-causing particles so that we can focus on your interior.

The cleaning efforts within your Riverhead home will depend on a range of factors. Our IICRC-certified technicians have access to a broad range of cleaning agents that get tailored to handle various types of odorous particulates. Some of the things that go into the cleaning of teach item will include:

    •    The kind of material that burned
    •    How long the fire went on
    •    The distance that the smoke traveled throughout your home

Depending on the results of these findings, it can take a day or two to handle cleanup, up to several weeks, depending on the type of restoration required.

Why Is Time an Issue?
When the damage from the fire begins to settle and the items cool, several things occur:

    •    Malodors tend to linger
    •    Soot adheres tighter to materials and makes it harder to remove
    •    Plastics may begin to yellow
    •    Other materials start to corrode

It is common for a fire to bring with it a range of side effects. SERVPRO technicians have the answer to any scenario that your restoration project brings. We will:

    •    Carefully clean soot-stained, residue-laden materials with specialized cleaning agents
    •    Remove any burnt carpeting and other unsalvageable materials
    •    Use paints and sealants to address odors that permeated the walls within the affected area
    •    Purge odors with the help of air scrubbers, hydroxyl generators, and other helpful tools and equipment

It is essential to remember that the heft of damage from a fire frequently does not come from the heat of the flames themselves, but rather the smoke and soot left behind. We have a proven process for handling the fallout from a fire, which includes the following steps:

    •    Containment: Our team puts barriers in place at doorways and entry points, then vent the room so that we can easily contain the soot within the loss area.
    •    Air Quality: We take necessary steps to ensure indoor air quality gets addressed by putting air scrubbers in place. This equipment grabs soot particles within the air, trapping them within the included HEPA filters.
    •    Documentation: Anything unsalvageable gets removed from your home. However, our techs carefully log each item taken away for insurance claim purposes.
    •    Pack-Outs: In some cases, we will pack up and move out contents for cleaning off-site or safe storage. This is also helpful so that our technicians have more room to work within the home.
    •    Cleaning: As with any fire damage project, we need to pay attention to odor removal and cleaning. There is never a one-size-fits-all approach, so we adjust our cleaning methods and products based on the residues present within the affected area.

SERVPRO of The North Fork is here to help with fire damage restoration on any scale. We have advanced equipment and technology to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Call us at (631) 591-3771, and our crew makes it “Like it never even happened.”

My Office Is Swimming -- How Can Professionals Dry Out Electronics, Documents, Books, and Photos?

8/3/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO for Water Damage Restoration to Important Documents for Your Riverhead Business

SERVPRO Stays Connected with Information About Innovative Water Damage Repair Strategies for Riverhead Businesses

It is a challenge to run a small business in Riverhead at any time. When a neighboring company has a weekend water cooler catastrophe, Monday morning can be a soggy mess. Paperwork, manuals, and even treasured pictures of your loved ones can suffer significant water damage because of the water dripping through ceiling tiles.

Are Special Skills Needed to Dry Out Papers and Books?

Water damage repair in Riverhead businesses spans a broad range of circumstances. The focus is understandably on returning water-soaked structures, fixtures like carpeting, and office furnishings to preloss conditions. Your office most likely has a host of other items vulnerable to water damage. Some might seem like relics in this digital age -- documents and paperwork that could be saved online. That can be your resolution going forward, but now you have items you want to save.

What Are Some Procedures to Water Damaged Papers?

SERVPRO recommends our production facility technicians evaluate and arrange for drying of wet papers. We access resources at our facility or available from trusted contractors:

What Is Sublimation and How Does It Repair Water Damage?

Freeze-drying uses a process called sublimation to bring the wet paper back from the brink of a pulpy mess. Sublimation controls damage with ultra-low temperatures and pressure to move frozen water from a solid to a vapor without the intervening liquid stage. Liquid-soaked paper is weak and liable to tear or stick together. Avoiding a return to that state is highly advantageous.

How Do Small Drying Chambers Help Reduce Water Damage?

In a smaller chamber, technicians can safely manipulate temperature, air movement, and dehumidification equipment to evaporate the moisture. Paper items that are damp and not soaked through completely can recover function when dried in such a contained area.

Let SERVPRO of The North Fork help repair the effects of water damage in your business office. We are available for consultation round the clock with one call to (631) 591-3771.

How Quickly Do You Respond to a Call?

Our crews can be at your home within hours of receiving the call. We know how catastrophic flooding can be, and we are available 24/7. Emergency mitigation also needs to happen as quickly as possible to prevent secondary flood damage at your Mattituck home. On arrival, we will:

    •    Do a scope to assess the full extent of the damage.
    •    Ensure it is safe to proceed. This process includes things such as making sure there are no electrical hazards.
    •    Formulate a plan for water extraction and restoration.
    •    Test the floodwaters to see what contaminants are present.
    •    Dress in the proper personal protection equipment (PPE)

What Happens Next?

SERVPRO crews get busy attacking the mess left behind from the flooding. Standing water is a big concern, so water extraction is the first priority. Before the water removal begins, debris may need mucking out, and our crews will take care of that. Certain items may need to be discarded differently, and we ensure the proper disposal of waste material. For water extraction, we use powerful pumps that can quickly remove gallons of water. We have truck mounted and portable pumps. Our submersible pumps to an excellent job of extracting deeper water.

What If There Is Hidden Water?

Hidden water is a problem and one you don't want to leave untreated. It can lead to mold and mildew developing and cause further damage to the structure and content. Our Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certified technicians use state-of-the-art technology to find hidden moisture pockets. This step includes using moisture sensors, moisture meters, and thermal imaging. Removing the water as rapidly as possible is the goal.

The Drying Out Process

Once the water gets removed, the drying out process begins. This process includes the use of centrifugal air movers, dehumidifiers, and industrial fans. The crew test the moisture in the air and include other factors to determine the proper ratio of air movers and dehumidifiers.

Repair & Restoration

Our crews are experts at not only cleaning up after a flood but repair and restoration as well. One of the things that may need doing to prevent further flood damage is controlled demolition. In this situation, flood cuts are made above the water line to remove the damaged sheetrock. Those cut areas have brand new sheetrock put in place. We assess walls, ceilings, cupboards, and flooring for contaminants and to see what is salvageable. If it can be saved, it will be. If not, repair and replacement get done to turn your home back to preloss condition.

What About the Contents? Can That Be Salvaged?

If your home's content can be cleaned on-site, the crew will move it to an area where that can happen. If not, we provide pack-out services. This process involves inventorying, packing up, and moving the content to our warehouse for cleaning. You may think most of the damaged content will need tossing, but that isn't always the case. SERVPRO can often restore items to their preloss condition. These include things such as:

    •    Dishes, glassware, and cookware
    •    Clothing
    •    Drapery and linens
    •    Personal items such as jewelry and knick-knacks
    •    Furniture including upholstered items
    •    Books and papers

When the work to the structure and inside of your home gets completed, we will return your restored content.

What Are the Final Steps?

Deodorizing and sanitizing are two of the final steps. We make sure every surface has been adequately cleaned and sanitized. SERVPRO teams use EPA-registered cleaning agents and disinfectants to ensure everything is safe. Musty smells are often present with any water instruction. To get rid of any lingering odors, we use a combination of air filtration devices (AFD), air scrubbers, and thermal fogging.

Where Does Flooding Do the Worst Damage to My Riverhead Home?

6/29/2020 (Permalink)

Flooding can quickly cause damage in your home. Contact SERVPRO for water removal and remediation efforts.

Floodwater can spread quickly through a property, but some areas of the house are more damaged by the water penetration than others.

As with any loss incident that could impact your Riverhead home, severity changes from one site to the next. In specific ways, you do not have a choice in how damaged your property might initially become due to spreading flood loss conditions. It is possible to impact how compromising these disasters become by securing professional restoration services like our SERVPRO team as soon as you recognize a disaster.

When it comes to restoring flood damage in your Riverhead home, there are many levels and actions that must be taken as soon as possible. Reducing the spread and severity of loss effects is the focal point of our fast-responding emergency technicians. We have skilled professionals accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) in multiple fields and niches such as water restoration, structural drying, and microbial remediation.

Does the Type of Flooding Impact the Damaged Areas?

Flooding is not the same in every house. While some homes in our region might be susceptible to flash flooding and its destructive properties, other homes might suffer roof damage by hurricane-force winds. The flooding that can result from a breach in your roof impacts the property differently than natural rising water penetrating your main floor or basement. Understanding these variances ensures that the appropriate restoration approach gets taken as soon as possible.

  • Roof Flooding – Flooding that begins from penetration through the roofing system can leave areas like the attic susceptible to substantial water loss. While these incidents are clean water threats, any pooling or saturation can spread quickly to the lower levels.
  • Natural Flooding – There are many instances of natural flooding that could impact your property. Flash flooding, or even slowly rising water levels, could find their way into lower levels of your home, including the basement and crawlspace.
  • Structural Breach/Wind-Driven Flooding – Missing siding and broken windows are also areas where flooding could begin. Wind-driven rain and other precipitation can find its way inside through these structural breaches and begin impacting all materials this water gets exposed to as it moves.

How Does Attic Flooding Get Resolved?

With roof damages, flooding in the attic is often unavoidable. Despite how quickly our SERVPRO team can respond to this emergency, there are usually several factors at work. Not only do you need temporary construction solutions that can tarp over any roof breaches, but you also need effective mitigation solutions. Regardless of the severity of these situations, we respond quickly 24/7. We have effective emergency services that can reduce the migration of loss effects to protect your home and its contents better. Some of these solutions include:

  • Extraction – As with all flood loss recovery situations, extraction is one of the initial tasks that our team must undertake. We have multiple practical pieces of equipment to complete this phase of recovery, including submersible pumps and wet vacuums.
  • Drying – While drying is a more complex and time-consuming element of recovery after a flood loss, its role in returning your home to preloss condition cannot be understated. Using air movers and dehumidifiers, we can manage evaporative drying to protect more of your structure.
  • Content Management – Many people use their attics for storage, so when this area becomes flooded by roof damage, content management becomes a vital service that our team offers. By assessing your personal belongings individually, we can determine whether these items can be restored on-site or in our climate-controlled warehouse facility.

Is Flooding in the Basement Easy to Clean?

When natural flooding penetrates lower levels like the basement, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the sight of your damaged home. We have effective practices that can protect your property beginning as soon as we arrive. Some of these approaches are designed to reduce the presence of standing water, while others are meant to address potential contamination concerns. Some of the steps that we get started immediately include:

  • Water Removal
  • Drying
  • Muck Out
  • Surface Cleaning

We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster – But What Does That Mean for You?

Every loss situation from flooding to fires benefits from competent restoration professionals arriving quickly. We use air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the structures and contents of buildings. Our SERVPRO team also uses antimicrobial products to ensure that a home is free from microbes.

What factors can affect my home’s drying time

5/21/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO in your local Riverhead area for all of your water damage needs.

We have powerful extraction and drying tools that can prevent removing damaged carpeting after a water loss.

Wet carpet can be a problematic situation in your Riverhead home for multiple reasons. Without addressing trapped moisture, water can penetrate to the vulnerable subflooring and become a costly situation for you to repair, but also could deteriorate the carpet itself or encourage odors.

Drying wet carpet, along with other water damage in Riverhead homes, begins with a thorough inspection of the property conducted by our competent project manager. By recognizing where absorption into the carpets has happened, we can better direct extraction and drying equipment to the area where it is most needed.

What Extractor Tools Can Help Remove Trapped Water in Carpets?

Removing standing water and trapped water in the carpet itself is a vital first step to take to begin restoration. If happening early enough, it is possible to protect this flooring from requiring discarding and reinstallation. Some of these water removal tools include:

  • Carpet wands
  • Stationary weighted extractors
  • Ride-on weighted extractors

Removing water and moisture from carpeted floors can help to make water losses “Like it never even happened.” Give our SERVPRO of The North Fork a call whenever water emergencies occur at (631) 591-3771.

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

When water leaks above your ceiling persist for long periods, you can begin to notice signs of deterioration or staining of your Riverhead home. Cleaning these damaged areas might not be as simple as you think.

Do Small Water Losses Require Professional Assistance?

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO for all your water damage issues in your Riverhead area.

Our SERVPRO team can help to identify moisture pockets you cannot see to ensure that the full problem gets addressed after a loss.

You are not alone if you hope to save yourself some money on restoration and recover efforts with DIY water removal for your Riverhead home. However, with so many facets of recovery, it might be overwhelming for property owners once this restoration begins.

One of the greatest potential threats that exist with DIY water restoration for Riverhead homes is missing moisture pockets that migrate beyond the surface. Sensitive materials can absorb standing water and penetrate areas like structural cavities, underneath the flooring, or above ceiling materials. Even small losses have this potential for migration, making it critical for a thorough evaluation.

How Can You Find Water You Cannot See on the Surface?

Though not visible on the surface, migrating water can wreak havoc on materials exposed. Locating these moisture pockets involves the use of sophisticated detection tools, including:

  • Surface moisture meters
  • Probing meters
  • Thermal imagery

While DIY restoration might be tempting for saving money, it might be costlier in the long run if you do not address the entire problem. Give our SERVPRO of The North Fork team a call anytime at (631) 591-3771.

Easing the Stress and Worry of Riverhead Residents -- Why SERVPRO Provides Fast and Expert Water Loss Assistance

When a water emergency devastates your comfortable Riverhead home, you need solutions from a company devoted to transforming the mess and chaos you experience back to preloss condition. Until it happens to you, the destruction that water can inflict on your home’s structural components and contents is unknown. After the disaster occurs, the aftermath becomes unimaginable. Whether from plumbing or appliance failure, a roof leak, storm damage, or flooding, incursions of water pose severe consequences to members of our community, why we strive to deliver the help you need.

What Can Cause Water Damage in My Home?

Water damage in Riverhead happens fast and from many sources. Our community is surrounded by water. Located at the mouth of the Peconic River, where the North and South Forks of Long Island diverge, Long Island Sound borders to the north and Great Peconic Bay to the east. Changing seasons and storms can force rain and seawater inside, causing catastrophic effects. But the most common reasons for water damage is less dramatic while still disastrous--plumbing leaks, spills, and malfunctioning household machines like dish and clothes washers, ice makers, water heaters, and more.

How Does Water Damage Affect My House?

Water losses in residential buildings impact two categories of property. The first concern is the structure itself. Water damages building materials in many ways, including:

Walls

  • Water soaks into drywall, causing the composite material to swell and crumble.
  • Lath and plaster construction resists water longer, but the wooden laths eventually swell, and the mortar between them breaks down, causing flaking and cracking of the plaster surface.
  • Wet insulation between and behind walls packs down, decreasing or eliminating its value in moderating temperature.

Framing and Other Structural Supports

  • Wood framing swells and warps, eventually weakening to the point where its load-bearing function declines, creating safety hazards.
  • Metal supports and fasteners rust and break
  • Joists and subfloors warp and weaken, disturbing the more decorative hardwood, tile, or laminate surface above.
  • Door and window frames distort, preventing the optimal functioning of these features.

Flooring

  • Laminate flooring cannot withstand any prolonged exposure to standing water, peeling apart, and requiring replacement.
  • Resilient tile might detach if water invades beneath.
  • Ceramic tiles can pop up if the subfloor swells, especially if the grout is cracked and allow water to percolate below.
  • Hardwood floors can cup or crown, the planks or strips swelling on the edges or the center as the subfloor wicks moisture up.
  • In extreme cases, hardwood floors can buckle, where the strips pull up and away from the subfloor.

Ceilings

  • Ceiling tiles can detach and fall.
  • Plaster or drywall ceilings can hold many gallons of water, creating an overhead hazard as the materials peel, bulge, and crack.

The second category of water damage concern includes the stress placed upon all of the contents, the furnishings, household goods, and personal possessions inside the structure.

Furniture

  • Wooden frames can swell, glue dissolve and detach, and paint and varnish stain floor coverings.
  • Upholstered furniture endures damage to fabrics and padding, creating a welcoming environment for mold growth and damage.
  • Metal fasteners and supports rust, bend, and twist.

Floor Coverings

  • Rugs and carpets both sustain significant harm when wet, stretching, ripping, staining, and delaminating, a process where layers of fiber peel away from the backing.
  • Pads soak up water and increase the chances of mold development.

Papers

  • Documents, books, and pictures all absorb moisture, inks dissolving, and the cellulose-based materials deteriorating.

Electronics

  • A wide array of devices might malfunction and can shock users.

Appliances

  • Subject to corrosion, and their wiring deteriorates, exposing food to spoilage in the case of freezers and refrigerators.

Textiles

  • Linens, clothing, window coverings, and other fabrics can break down, and mold and mildew proliferate.
  • Bedding absorbs water, becoming an incubator for microbial growth and odors.

Can One Restoration Company Manage All Aspects of a Residential Water Crisis?

Reading through this admittedly partial listing of the damage water can do can create panic, why SERVPRO is the partner you need to recover from this multifaceted emergency. Our comprehensive training and experience in the hundreds of ways water affects contents are essential to the successful restoration of not only your structure and its contents but also your way of life.

What Happens During Professional Water Damage Restoration?

We focus on two major activities designed to mitigate and remediate the water loss.

Water Removal

Why is water removal the first phase?

Studies show that the more liquid water removed, the faster and more effective the drying out of structures and contents proceeds. This is why we:

  • Pump water more than two inches deep
  • Extract all visible water with powerful truck-mounted and portable equipment

Structural and Content Drying

Why do we actively dry out spaces and items?

Relying on time and open windows to evaporate the water absorbed into building materials and contents is inefficient and not practical when the weather is cold or wet. Research-based drying methods we use include:

  • Gathering moisture data to determine drying goals
  • In the structure, positioning air movers and moderating temperature to move water from materials into the air as a vapor for dehumidifiers to capture
  • Contents have many drying challenges, which is why SERVPRO often recommends pack-outs to our production facility where we can use resources such as:
  • Contained smaller drying spaces for furnishings
  • Freeze-drying for papers and photos
  • Industrial washers and dryers for textiles

Training, equipment, and experience in a multitude of water damage scenarios are why SERVPRO of The North Fork can make it “Like it never even happened.” Call as soon after the water crisis as possible at (631) 591-3771.

Fire Damage In Your Riverhead Home

How to Deal with Fire Damaged Appliances in Your Riverhead Home

Most fires in America occur in the kitchen and typically create minimal damage. After a kitchen fire, you are left having to get rid of smoke odors and clean the soot and smoke residue off of all types of surfaces, everything from flooring to appliances.

Fire damage in your Riverhead kitchen requires a lot of cleaning. With the right products and techniques, it is relatively easy to clean your kitchen and restore it to the preloss condition. When cleaning your appliances, keep in mind that smoke residue is not your run of the mill dirt or dust, and requires special care to ensure no further damage.

First, use something dry to clean off excess residues such as a dry sponge, cloth, or even a feather duster. Wet cleaning right away may cause the residue to become engrained into porous surfaces, making it more challenging to remove. After removing the excess, you can now proceed to wet cleaning and polishing. Whether you clean or you have professional assistance, you should wear safety goggles and gloves to avoid irritating your skin and eyes with smoke residue or chemical cleaning products. You should also make sure that appliances are unplugged before cleaning.

SERVPRO has specially formulated cleaners for all types of surfaces. For appliances Wall and All Surface, Cleaner, and Ready-to-Use Glass Cleaner are typically great options. If these cleaners by themselves do not seem adequate, you may add Industrial Cleaner, or Fire Star to raise the alkalinity of the cleaning solution for more effective cleaning of harder-to-clean appliances.

Regardless of the type of cleaner, it is essential to rinse the appliances with water, so the cleaners do not impact the polished finishes. If the appliance you are cleaning has some yellowing from the heat of the fire, Wood Cream Paste is effective in removing the discoloration and polishing the surface. Glass cleaner works well at the end of the cleaning process to restore the shine to an appliance.

How to Handle a Boiler Tank Leak in Riverhead

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage in hospitals can be devastating. SERVPRO can restore the damage with as little intrusion as possible to your patients.

Boiler Tank Leaking in a Riverhead Hospital

With hundreds of rooms throughout your Riverhead hospital to regulate with various temperatures and available hot water, the most efficient practice is to run large boiler units in the lower levels of the facility. These units do occasionally break down, and blown seals or malfunctioning elements can allow leaks in the boiler that can quickly flood this subterranean maintenance area of your medical building.

Depending on the type of boiler used in your building, you can have a constant feed into your system that can allow for continual water damage in your Riverhead hospital should something go wrong. Often these automated systems can move from the current boiler to another if the operator notices an issue in the room, but this might happen after you already need the professional expertise and fast response of our SERVPRO water restoration technicians.

It is necessary to remove standing water as quickly as possible from this area and that this work gets done carefully and considerately. Tight quarters between the boiler units create complications for water removal. Therefore, we must utilize numerous tools and attachments to ensure that the surface water gets removed entirely before wall materials can become saturated and damaged by even the few inches of standing water on the floors. Our SERVPRO team can utilize:

  • Electric submersible pumps
  • Wet vacuums
  • Squeegee wands
  • Centrifugal and axial air movers
  • Desiccant dehumidifiers

Regulating the temperature, airflow, and humidity in the damaged area can allow us to maximize drying efficiency. While repairs to the boiler unit itself are still necessary, we can thoroughly dry and restore the damaged area to its original condition “Like it never even happened.”

It is crucial to act quickly when a potentially devastating situation develops with massive boiler systems in the lower levels of your hospital. No matter how the damage occurs, you can always count on the team that is ready to respond 24/7 with qualified technicians and premier equipment. Give our SERVPRO of The North Fork team a call today at (631) 591-3771.

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Storms are frequent in New York. Call us for fast flood damage remediation.

What to Do Before SERVPRO Arrives at Flooded Riverhead Homes

Shortly after a flood loss occurs in your Riverhead home, you can recognize a need for professional recovery. Even though We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster, there are often still several hours between your initial call and when the restoration technicians of our SERVPRO team arrive to begin emergency services like extractions and content management. Still, there are steps that you can take that can reduce your losses provided that the damage in your home has not gotten out of control or unsafe to navigate.

Knowing these few steps can help you to lessen the severity of flood damage to Riverhead homes by decreasing the likelihood of potential health hazards or protecting contents and belongings in the path of the disaster. With these pre-restoration steps out of the way, our professionals can reach your damaged address and begin to work immediately on water removal, drying, and cleaning up the property.

Relocating Your Belongings

One of the most destructive aspects of a natural disaster like flooding is the effect it can have on the contents of your home. Your personal belongings and possessions are often more valuable and treasured to the family than the structure itself, so take a few minutes when possible to move contents in the path of the flooding to a safer location.

Place Sandbags

While our SERVPRO professionals arrive with premier extraction equipment, reducing the spread of flooding throughout your home can often occur with the application of sandbags. You can even drop these in doorways or thresholds inside the house to prevent water migration from tiled to carpeted areas that would be more challenging to restore.

Sever Utilities

It might not always be possible to sever utilities like your water and electricity before you vacate the premises. Still, when you do, it can reduce potential health hazards and risks for responding technicians. Our team focuses on safety, and we bring generators along with us to run the array of electric tools in our inventory if electrical service has gotten severed to the house.

After a flood, there are a few steps that you can take to protect your home before our SERVPRO of The North Fork team arrives. Contact our rapid response team 24/7 at (631) 591-3771.

A Simple Plan for Water Damage Remediation in Jamesport

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage needs to be addressed quickly - before it turns into a mold infestation. Contact team SERVPRO for effective drying services today.

Cleanup and Sanitization After Water Damage in Jamesport Home

Bacteria and microbes develop rapidly after water damage in a home. In fact, after just 48-hours, the water in a home requires the same safety equipment as handling a loss contaminated with sewage.

That is why water damage cleanup in Jamesport homes must begin as soon as possible when it happens. SERVPRO technicians arrive quickly to extract the water, and they also test it to determine if any bacterial agents or contaminants are present.

Vast Array of Cleaning Agents

SERVPRO techs have access to a diverse selection of cleaning solutions, including antimicrobial, solvents, and antibacterial formulas. They also have specialized mixtures for specific surfaces such as cleaning masonry, tile, concrete, or laminated surfaces without causing harm.

Scoping for Water Loss

One of the essential things when cleaning up water is determining the migration path. SERVPRO techs can trace anywhere the water went using their state-of-the-art moisture detection equipment, and take the appropriate actions to remove it and then move on to drying the property.

Deep Cleaning

Once the property verifies as attaining pre-set drying goals, the technicians work on cleaning all water-affected surfaces with their professional-grade agents. SERVPRO technicians perform proactive treatments to avoid the setup of mold colonies through the use of their antimicrobial solutions and using sealants whenever necessary.

Odor Control Treatments

After a water loss in a home, a residual musty smell may remain after drying and cleaning. In these cases, the technicians deploy different methods depending upon the level of odor control needed. For light odors, the techs use time-release gel capsules. When more robust odor eradication, the use of fogging equipment is a useful method in most instances, the techs determine on a case by case basis if this method is a good fit. While wearing protective gear, a technician uses a fogger to deliver a heated solvent. The fog penetrates porous objects and neutralizes any type of odor.

When water damage hits your property, call SERVPRO of The North Fork at (631) 591-3771. The certified, experienced techs are available 24/7 to come to your home and make the water loss, "Like it never even happened."

Is Your Riverhead Property in Need of Emergency Restoration Services? SERVPRO has you Covered!

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

No matter your emergency restoration needs, SERVPRO is always standing by.

SERVPRO of The North Fork is Your First Choice for Emergency Restoration Needs in Riverhead

While we have worked hard to obtain the accolades that we have received over the years that we have served Riverhead residents, our awards are not the reason we do what we do. Our restoration services get grounded in the principles that every area home and business owner deserve a clean and safe environment. When disaster strikes, it can feel like this safe place is far from possible. We work tirelessly to restore damaged properties, but also the hope of our customers as well. We are not satisfied with a completed project unless you are, and our focus is to exceed your expectations.

Fire Damage Restoration

A rapid response is vital to fire losses, as these can be among the most immediately devastating circumstances. Because fire emergencies do not cease to be a threat once extinguishment takes place, a fast response to your fire-damaged Riverhead home can be vital to providing the emergency service your property needs. From debris removal to deodorization and cleaning, we have an entire division of qualified Fire & Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) and Odor Control Technicians (OCT) accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to help.

Mitigation is a vital service that our SERVPRO team can provide to fire-damaged properties as well because it helps to reduce the continued loss in the house and prevent the costs of restoration from getting out of control. Mitigation of water damage and smoke effects can help to protect contents in the house from irreparable damage. We have a team of dedicated cleaning technicians that can carefully move at-risk belongings from Riverhead homes to our nearby facility for focused attention and safe storage.

Soot is one of the most problematic effects that can exist after a fire loss incident, as these present conditions in the environment can cause health effects. Our professionals have proven techniques for the removal of this residue, including the use of agitative cleaning practices and potent cleaning products. We can also work to reduce airborne soot by deploying air scrubbers and hydroxyl generators throughout your Riverhead home.

Mold Remediation

The onset of mold effects can happen quickly, especially with exposure to moist conditions for more than a couple of days. Susceptible materials within this environment can become hosts to naturally occurring spores that have the necessary conditions to develop into more hazardous organisms that can threaten your entire Riverhead home. While no restoration team can remove mold and spores entirely from your household, we can remove active colonization and its immediate threats through the use of our effective remediation practices.

Our Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT) are among the most experienced and well-trained professionals of our SERVPRO team. When mold gets discovered in your Riverhead property, you can rely on the fast response of these IICRC-Certified technicians to help. Remediation for our team begins with a thorough inspection of the property to determine the spread and migration of mold effects from the source. Understanding the path that the organism has taken can ensure that the right steps occur to remove the active colonization entirely.

There are many instances in which the application of antimicrobial sprays can help to reduce the presence of mold spores on surfaces. We can further improve the effectiveness of our remediation efforts by ensuring the property gets dried and that the air is getting filtered of spores and contaminants before other remediation tasks like soda blasting, sanding, and even demolition take place in Riverhead homes.

Water Damage Restoration

Water loss incidents are among the most common threats that we face in the Long Island area with severe winter weather that can freeze pipes and many of the aging structures susceptible to plumbing breaches. No matter how severe water emergencies might initially appear in Riverhead properties, it is wise to entrust your home to the experience and equipment of our IICRC-Certified Water Restoration Technicians (WRT), many of which have additional endorsements in Applied Structural Drying (ASD.)

Our experienced professionals can help by implementing effective extraction techniques as soon as we first reach damaged Riverhead homes. Standing water can pose a substantial threat to exposed flooring and wall surfaces, and the faster that our team can remove this moisture, the better able to preserve construction materials we are. We have dozens of potential extraction tools from our electric sump pump to powerful units like the extractor truck in our SERVPRO Green Fleet.

Drying is a balancing act of high-velocity and high-performance tools and equipment. From the hundreds of air movers and dehumidifiers that we have available to our specialty drying tools, we can remove moisture from materials, surfaces, and cavities. Once drying begins, our technicians can secure our efforts to prevent microbial and fungal threats with the application of antimicrobial sprays to exposed structural elements in Riverhead residences.

Storm Damage Restoration

The Greater Long Island area is no stranger to extreme weather conditions coming in from the northwest or coming in from the Atlantic Ocean. With the potential for hurricane strength weather events bearing down on Riverhead homes and businesses, the risk of structural damage is high. When breaches in roofs, siding, foundations, and other home construction materials occur, the home becomes vulnerable to water penetration and flooding.

Merely saying that We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster does not solve the problems that your Riverhead home might face after a severe storm. Instead, we show our customers the advantages of this fast response by beginning vital extraction efforts with portable electric submersible pumps and wet-vacs fitted with light wands. This mitigation approach can also allow our SERVPRO team to catalog loss and earmark items for relocation to our facility for drying, deodorization, and safe storage.

The drying of structural elements is an excellent path to identifying what surfaces and materials deteriorated beyond preservation and restoration. We strive to restore construction materials and contents on-site, but in some cases, controlled demolition must occur to give our team a better position to reduce microbial threats and eliminate any contamination that could exist in a Riverhead home.

Despite the many threats that your home or business could face in its lifetime, knowing what restoration team you can trust can make the difference in saving both time and money on recovery. Give our SERVPRO of The North Fork team a call today at (631) 591-3771.

Are You Serving Soot in Your Jamesport Restaurant?

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

Even small kitchen fires can be devastating to your restaurant. SERVPRO has the experience to restore your business quickly.

Thriving After Fire Damages Your Jamesport Restaurant

No matter how attentive you and your employees are, a kitchen fire in your Jamesport restaurant is always a possibility. So many variables and moving parts are in play as your chefs create, and servers cater to diner’s requests. Equipment malfunctions or human error can turn your well-oiled system into a frightening and destructive inferno. Our team is ready with the emergency, mitigation, and remediation services designed to get you cooking again.

Kitchen Fires Present Special Challenges

Fire damage in a Jamesport restaurant nearly always involves burning food, oil, and grease. These materials create a particular type of residue that is protein-based. We manage other soots composed of incompletely combusted building materials and contents. A protein-based residue instead takes the familiar spattering and steaming always experienced in cooking to a new and devastating level. As contrasted with the burning of building materials, a protein fire is characterized by:

  • Lower temperatures at the origin site
  • Reduced levels of visible smoke
  • Evaporation of the burned material
  • Reduction of protein-rich fuel to a fine mist
  • Pungent and persistent odors

The mist travels throughout the space, penetrating hoods, fans, ductwork, and ceiling tiles. It is composed of particles tiny enough to float on air currents and through HVAC systems, meaning it quickly invades your restaurant's dining areas, bars, restrooms, foyers, and even adjacent businesses. Textiles, insulation, paint, woodwork, and other porous or semi-porous materials are all fair game. Pantries, prep areas, freezers, and coolers are also vulnerable to the thin, tightly adhered residue. When SERVPRO crews evaluate the scene, inspection moves far from the original point of ignition.

Removal of Residue Is a Challenge

Protein fire residues not only spread widely but also are oil-based and very hard to dislodge. Additionally, the film can be nearly invisible to the eye, increasing the risk of missing some soot. These features make it especially important that SERVPRO professionals conduct a thorough assessment. To loosen and remove the residue, we frequently use solvents, requiring personal protective equipment (PPE) and evacuation of unprotected occupants during the process. Our technicians take care to clear all of the solvents from food preparation and consumption spaces.

Rely on the professional at SERVPRO of The North Fork to take charge of your restaurant's rejuvenation after a kitchen fire. Call us day or night at (631) 591-3771, so we can start the remediation process.

If your basement floods due to snowmelt, never wait to get help.

Local Jamesport Flood Damage Remediation Services

Many things could cause flood damage to your home, from a bad storm to a tree falling on your home. However, many people do not consider that snowmelt could cause flood damage to your home. As snow falls and then melts throughout December, things are considerably wet. However, if a lot of snow melts at once, it can cause problems for your home.

Runoff from snowmelt can seep into your home and cause flood damage in your Jamesport basement. If your sump pump fails, you could be left with centimeters of water on your basement floor. For this reason, if you discover excess water in your basement, you should reach out for help immediately.

Here at SERVPRO, we're water restoration experts. We understand how time-sensitive any kind of water-based damage is. For this reason, as soon as we get your call, a team of our flood damage technicians can quickly gather and travel to your home. We use advanced equipment to combat the floodwaters in your house, such as wet/dry vacuums and extractors.

Once SERVPRO arrives, we can quickly remove any furniture that needs to be dried and bring it to our facility. We can pack up any belongings in new boxes and make sure that we can get to every inch of excess water in your basement. From there, we can remove the standing water using our advanced equipment.

Many people thing excess moisture cannot impact concrete in an unfinished basement, but that is simply not true. Water can stain the surface and leave residue behind. For this reason, here at SERVPRO, we make sure to dry the area of damage as thoroughly as we can using devices like dehumidifiers, axial fans, and heaters. Lastly, we can search for any hidden pockets of water we may have missed with thermal imaging cameras. Mitigating Holiday Fire Damage in a Jamesport Home.

12/29/2019 (Permalink)

Jamesport, if you endure a fire over the holidays let SERVPRO help you through the damage.

Holidays can be wonderful, but holidays can sometimes bring unwanted damage, like fire to your Jamesport home.

Homeowners all over the country are decorating their homes for the holidays. While safety is likely, it is not always a guarantee. Between 2013 and 2017 alone, US fire departments responded to an average of 160 home fires that started due to Christmas trees. These fires caused $10 million in direct property damage each year, and electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 44% of these home Christmas tree fires.

If holiday decor in your Jamesport home causes fire damage, certified SERVPRO technicians are available day and night to restore your home to a preloss condition. Not only does rapid mitigation remove the risk posed by fire damage residues, but having experienced technicians clean after a disaster occurs can help save you time, money, and stress during the holiday season.

Minimizing Holiday Fire Risks

Here are some tips to help you minimize fire damage risks during the holiday season :

  • Avoid overloading extension cords. Overuse of extension cords increases fire risk. Tightly-wound cables can build up heat without letting it dissipate, which also creates more risk for homeowners.
  • Use LED Christmas lights. Older lights heat up significantly, which can be especially risky if these lights are on a real tree. Switching to LED Christmas lights can also lower energy costs during the holiday season.
  • Monitor carbon monoxide detectors and furnaces. Something as small as a cracked heat exchanger can lead to carbon monoxide build-up.
  • Ensure there are working smoke detectors on every floor. If you do not currently have any on your property, check with your local fire department for programs like free smoke detector installation.

SERVPRO Odor Control Methods

If fire damage odor remains after cleanup, technicians can implement multi-phase odor control techniques. The first phase in many odor control procedures is chemical containment, where the goal is to contain or block odor molecules from vaporizing into the air by spraying chemical deodorizer on them.

Phase two is vapor odor control, which can include materials that release deodorant vapors into the air. The purpose of the second phase is to counteract the effects of odor-causing particles that became airborne before phase one. Phase three, meanwhile, typically involves thermal fogging, which allows for dry, solvent-based smoke to proliferate and penetrate porous surfaces to remove odors.

Floods Happen in Riverhead! SERVPRO Can Provide Advice, Mitigation, Cleanup and Restoration Help

Taking These Actions Has the Potential to Lessen Flood Damage to Riverhead Homes

New York deals with severe weather regularly, blizzards, heavy thunderstorms, and occasionally, hurricanes. Fortunately, there are actions that property owners can take to lessen the impact flood damage has on a home.

It would be impossible to avoid flood damage in Riverhead altogether; however, numerous things may leave a residence open for water damage. Giving these areas attention in the present has the potential to avoid more significant loss down the road.

Why SERVPRO?
The technicians undergo extensive IICRC-based certifications to assist property owners in limiting loss after a water loss or other disaster in the home. They not only clean up floodwater but also suggest repairs that help with avoiding this type of damage in the future. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification is the standard-bearer for this industry.

Landscape Should Slope Away From the Property
Water, as we know, follows the path of least resistance, and when the way leads to your property, it increases the chances of flood damage. A simple solution involves building up the grade around your home, so water runs away, not towards the foundation.

Have a List of Numbers in Case of Emergency
Everyone should have a list of whom to call when there is a home disaster such as your insurance agent and include your policy number on the list. There are also helpful apps, including the SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile Plan. This free ERP app is a tool for both commercial property owners and homeowners. It allows the storage of vital information about the property such as the shutoff locations of utilities and contact numbers, so if damage occurs, help from the local emergency response team is just a few taps away. This handy, mobile app is especially helpful for property owners who are out of town when disaster strikes.

Create an Emergency Plan for the Home
If your home flooded tomorrow, what could you save in 10 minutes? With a little planning and preparation, you can save even more. If you have not organized essential papers, put them in a single spot that is easy to grab on the go if necessary. Invest in several industrial plastic bins that allow for an airtight seal, so if water enters, things that might be affected by excessive humidity get safely placed inside the containers.

Flood damage needs fast removal from your home. Call SERVPRO of The North Fork at (631) 591-3771, the technicians are available 24/7 and can handle any size water loss in your home, and We're Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Odors Removed From Commercial Facilities in Riverhead and Southold

Odors removed from commercial facilities

Sometimes you notice it right away, and sometimes it comes into your consciousness little by little.  Either way, having bad odors in the workplace throws off the efficiency and output of an office staff and in worst case scenarios, the odors are severe enough to stop activity and clear the building.

Sometimes the source is known and sometimes not - we're ready and on the job in no time to clear the air and make things as they were, "Like it never even happened."  We have various techniques, equipment and supplies that we employ depending on the type and source.

Odors that come from excess humidity where mold and mildew are present are handled differently as mold mitigation has specific protocols that we follow and removal of the mold and the moisture are necessary.  We've had recent work in hamlets all through the Towns of Riverhead and Southold where moisture and mold were a problem.

Water Damage in Education Buildings

6/26/2019 (Permalink)

water damage in education buildings

Water damage in public spaces presents numerous problems and potential health risks because of the microbial growth that follows along in high moisture situations.

SERVPRO of the North Fork is here to help.  Water and mold love to feed on organic materials in moist and wet environments.  When you see piles of paper, cardboard boxes, fabric and the like - you will have potential for mold growth.

In mold situations, like a recent one in Cutchogue, NY - we don't just blow in air as it can cause greater damage.  Blowing and moving air sends mold spores sailing around airborne where they could potentially land on other surfaces and grow, the worst part of mold is more mold.  Don't set a fan on it, call us at 516-767-9600.

We drop containment walls and utilize other barriers and such to minimize spread of mold spores.  Call today, we can help!

Materials and Supplies In Basements Can Get Moldy

For many offices and schools, lots of things are sent down to the basement for storage - and there it will sit until someday it is needed again.  But having a too moist environment is an invitation for mold and mildew to step in.  Once they do, they can destroy the materials and spread to destroy more - which can be costly.

At SERVPRO of the North Fork we are very thorough and especially so if the environment is one where children will gather.  If you suspect mold or mildew, please reach out to us, we can help.  Note that in NYS anything over 1o square feet of mold will need to have independent environmental testing done.  If you need more information on this, please call our office at 631-591-3771

Water Water Everywhere in Mattituck

6/26/2019 (Permalink)

Water is available in every home and virtually every building as a necessity, but it also can be as a terrible liability when it sudden presents where it shouldn't be.  This can be via pipe burst, sewage backup, flooding, plumbing failures and human error.  We've had thousand of these and the common denominator is always WATER.

At SERVPRO of the North Fork, some of the first things we do on a water job like a recent one in Mattituck, include taking a visual inspection, multiple moisture readings in the air and building materials such as drywall and wood framing.  We check the moisture levels in the air as well.

A main task is removing moisture in the air, when the humidity levels are too high.  Our equipment does this rapidly!  We repeatedly test and retest the surfaces and air through the job to ensure that moisture levels are within acceptable ranges.

Dehumidifying Basements on the North Fork

6/20/2019 (Permalink)

Damp Basements

At SERVPRO of the North Fork we are aware that you have all been experiencing a very damp season - here is some information about how to avoid moisture buildup in the basement.

Outside:  Make sure sprinklers are not hitting windows and bilco doors where water can leak in.  Check your gutter down spouts and make sure they drain down away from the foundation.

Basement Dehumidification:  Basements don't have to be musty damp and dank spaces!  Left alone it will build and could lead to mold and mildew growth.  Make sure any pipes that are leaking are repaired, look for pipes with a lot of condensation and sweat.  Turn on a dehumidifier and monitor the humidity.

Want low maintenance?  There are now self pumping dehumidifiers that will route water out to a floor drain or out a basement window - set the desired humidity low - like 50%, to start bringing down the moisture in the air rapidly.  New machines can process many pints of water a day - so if you have an older unit, investing in a new energy efficient high volume machine may be wise.  You should check it periodically to make sure it is operating optimally.

Wet Wood Can Become Damaged If Left Alone

6/20/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage to Wood

At SERVPRO of the North Fork we see a lot of water damage, and step in to help when diy remedies aren't working.

Wet wood sometimes will dry on it's own just fine - but if severe or if conditions still exist or if the environment does not allow for the moisture to leave, or water has gotten into areas you cannot dry, you could be left with more damage than you bargained for.  Wood in wet conditions too long can cup, crown, warp, weaken, swell, split, grow mold or fungus - and products can separate and break down - including plywood, masonite and pressboard.

At SERVPRO of the North Fork we have the right equipment for the job to rapidly reduce the presence of moisture and water in order to stop the deterioration of the structure - call us for fast efficient service and protect your home or building from further deterioration.

Keeping Costs Down with Water Damage Cleanup

6/20/2019 (Permalink)

Removed drywall

We know that re-rocking an entire room with drywall is an expensive endeavor - and often unnecessary if the water damage is contained to just the lower portion.

At SERVPRO of the North Fork, we cut walls within a safe margin taking only what is necessary.  Replacement with your contractor will then use much less materials than if the entire room was stripped.  Less materials means less labor, less expense, and less in the landfills for the environment.

Wet drywall is removed to dry out the wall cavity and framing, but in cases where we determine that removal is not necessary, we can make pilot holes and dry areas behind the wall with our equipment, monitoring the moisture readings until at an acceptable level to ensure the area is dry.

You can trust your local SERVPRO franchise to do  the proper drying or cleanup method for your walls and sheetrock.

How to Store Items in Basements To Prevent Water Damage

6/20/2019 (Permalink)

Basement Storage

At SERVPRO of the North Fork we unfortunately see a great deal of damages done to heirlooms, valuables and personal property through water as well as from fire, mold animals and sewage.

Basements in particular are problematic because they are convenient empty areas that can hold years of accumulated treasures.  We'll focus on water damage, as that is the primary cause of loss.

1.  Never store your most valuable irreplaceable items in the basement - this would be documents, photos, film, textiles.

2.  Have a high efficiency dehumidifier - self pumping is a great feature.  Run it at 50% humidity to keep down moisture in the air.

3.  Store items in closed plastic storage containers with lids on shelving, up off of the floor.  The more valuable the items to you, the higher up they should be placed.

4.  Make sure stored items are not underneath pipes that could leak or burst, or underneath sinks, tubs and toilets on floors above.

Mold Facts

6/20/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can be very costly to repair and the effects it can have on your health can be serious. Do not ignore the problem, it won’t go away it will eventually get worse. If the affected area is bigger than 10 square foot will require a mold remediation expert.

Consider the following mold facts:

  • Keep indoor humidity levels below 60%. The ideal levels are between 30-50%. Relative humidity can be measured by a moisture or humidity meter, a small and inexpensive instrument available at most hardware stores.
  • If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes, act fast to dry the wet surfaces and reduce the moisture or water source.
  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to re mediate your mold infestation.

The more time goes by, the more damage it caused on building materials such as drywall, floors of all types including, building structures, ceiling, etc. Water can intrude through many seamless cracks and openings hard to reach during rainy seasons and storms. 6/20/2018 (Permalink)

Take action as soon as you notice flooding.

Unexpected issues in your home are not enjoyable, but they are common. A flooded basement can give the homeowner the sense of helplessness and panic. Basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your Long Island basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
  • And many more

Mold Grown in Children Toys?

6/18/2018 (Permalink)

Be weary of rubber ducky's.

Reprinted by www.insideedition.com

They bob around in bathtubs, but they are definitely not clean.

A new study has found ugly things lurking inside rubber ducky bath toys. "The dark side of plastic materials in contact with potable water" researched 19 plastic playthings that live in the tub.

A team from the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology and the University of Illinois collected five bath toys from different Swiss homes. They also purchased rubber ducks to be studied in adults-only households.

Researchers found that lying around in humid, warm and wet bathrooms creates bacteria and fungi in plastic toys that squirt water. They also exposed the toys to sweat, urine, water and soap over 11 days.

Then they cut them in half and studied the contents.

Study results showed bacteria such as drug-resistant Legionella, as well as E.coli and Listeria, were festering inside the toys' plastic guts. They also found mold.

Those bacteria can lead to infections, researchers said.

Water isn't the only culprit, the study found. Plastic used in the toys is also to blame by releasing carbon compounds that nourish bacteria.

The researchers said using high-quality polymers to manufacture the toys would solve the problem. But that's not an immediate solution. Plugging the holes in the playthings would stop water from getting inside and creating a mess. Or, adults could wash and disinfect rubber duckies after bath time.

Fireworks Safety

6/18/2018 (Permalink)

Reprinted by www.cnn.com

Fireworks and hot temperatures can be a dangerous combination. In addition to harming themselves, people are also in danger of lighting up their entire neighborhoods.

"What people don't realize is while they're setting off fireworks and sparklers in hot, dry heat or wind, that fires can move very quickly, putting their neighborhood directly in threat. Each year, 230 people on average go to the emergency room in the weeks leading up to and after the Fourth of July, with the majority of those injuries including burns affecting hands and fingers, eyes, arms, legs, head and ears, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Firecrackers cause 20% of those injuries, and children between the ages of 5 and 9 and adults 25 to 44 are at the most risk of injury. The National Weather Service has some tips to keep your party from ending up at the hospital or starting a fire. Though a lot of the tips seem to be common sense, they are listed because people have been injured after not observing them.

In dry areas:

• Obey local ordinances regulating the sale and use of fireworks.

• Use fireworks in a safe area, away from dry fields, forests and buildings.

• Carefully follow label directions, and always have adult supervision.

• Light one firework at a time, and handle lighters safely.

• Never point or throw fireworks at people or animals.

• Keep water and garden tools nearby. Wet towels can extinguish small flames.

• After the celebration ends, observe the area where fireworks were used to make sure everything is safe before leaving.

Categories of Water Damage

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

Water is not just water. When a home or business suffers water damage, the clean up procedure and safety vary depending of the type of water.

There are 3 categories of water:

  • Category 1 is considered white or clean water – fresh water pumped into the home that may have come from an overflowing sink with no contamination, broken water supply line, appliances malfunction, melting ice or snow, falling rain water, broken toilet tanks that not contain contaminants or additives. This water type does not pose substantial harm to humans. However, once clean water leaves the exit point, it might not remain clean once it gets in contact with other surfaces.
  • Category 2 Contains a significant level of contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort and sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans. Examples of category 2 water can include; discharge from showers, sink, overflows from dishwashers and washing machines, overflow from toilet bowls, broken aquariums, etc. The cleanliness of category 2 water can deteriorate when it gets into contact with building materials, systems and contents or mixing with soils and others contaminants.
  • Category 3: This category of water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Category 3 water is known as blackwater and is the most dangerous of the three because its primary source is sewage, toilet backflows, all forms of flooding from seawater, ground surface water rising water from rivers or streams, and other contaminants entering or affecting the indoor environment.

The water professional at SERVPRO of the North Fork can help you to understand the different types of contaminated water and what it means during the restoration and clean up.

2018 Hurricane Season Predictions

6/4/2018 (Permalink)

Satellite image by NOAA

NOAA has predicted a normal to above normal  season for the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season this year, which occurs from June 1 through November 30.

What is normal?  This prediction indicates the Atlantic coast could see 10-16 named storms, 5-9 of which could be hurricanes.  Of those, 1-4 could result in major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.  These major hurricanes could be categories 3, 4 or 5 and can create significant damage and destruction.

Doing as many preventative steps as you can before storm season has begun can help to minimize your damages and losses.  Trim any trees and branches that are heavy, dead, or a threat to personal property, electric wires or a structure.  Round up any loose items that could become airborne.  Secure and fasten down large items that must remain but could become airborne or move in flooding.

Make hurricane shutters cutting plywood to fit all windows and doors, secure all rolling overhead garage doors from inside, make sure all drains, gutters and downspouts are clear and drain away from the property.

Use proper personal safety.  If there is a regional evacuation - secure your property and evacuate.

Commercial Building Rising Temperature Pipe Burst

6/4/2018 (Permalink)

Pipe burst affecting the floors of a facility meeting room.

If your business has water damage, SERVPRO at the North Fork has all the equipment and services to handle even the most difficult task.

We understand unexpected circumstances and issues can arise, such as standing water or the presence of mold is problematic and would require special attention to be cleaned as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the property. In this case shown in the photos above is an example of a facility which had a water leak from a pipe burst, the water inside them expands as it approaches freezing temperatures, and this causes an increase in pressure inside the pipe. When the pressure arises too high for the pipe to contain, it ruptures. Pipe burst generated a lot of standing water in the existing rooms, and we extracted the water, cleaned and sanitized affected areas.

We used safe and proper cleaning techniques to protect the safety of the facilities employees and customers, keeping our employees safe with PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to really utilize the full effectiveness of our professional and certified cleaning techniques to the very best of our ability and made a positive difference to the site completing our scope efficiently.

Sewage Backup in Commercial Building

5/31/2018 (Permalink)

Sewage backups are common occurrences when a sewer line is clogged. If your property is old and the plumbing and sewer systems have not been renovated, your sewage backup may be caused by broken, cracked or collapse lines. Sewage backup can cause much greater harm if not addressed on timely manner with precision to satisfy the property standards.

In the picture you can see this building had a sewage backup originated from multiple backed up toilets because, sanitary risers do not have a proper flow to excrete the water into the main sewer lines into the county sewer system, it needed to be cleaned and sanitized as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. SERVPRO of the North Fork has the experience and adequate equipment to provide efficient intervention. We can arrive to your home or business within a few hours to minimize water damage and begin sewage cleanup, we can also advise you on which of your possessions can be safely cleaned or restored and which should be replaced saving you time making decision making a whole lot easier. Taking the right steps is the key to saving money and problem solving reduces further losses and saves time. We are with you one step at a time.

Hurricane Season’s Around the Corner. Here’s What to Expect.

5/29/2018 (Permalink)

What New Yorkers need to know to prepare

Reprinted by NYtimes.com

This year’s hurricane season should be normal or slightly more active than average, government forecasters said on Thursday.

After the exceptionally destructive season last year, the prediction might seem like a reprieve of sorts. But a season with few storms can do tremendous damage if a single storm makes landfall. Hurricane season runs from June 1 until Nov. 1 and peaks from mid-August through late October.

“We’re not expecting the season to be one of the most active on record,” said Gerry Bell, lead hurricane season forecaster with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center. But, he said, “It’s time to start getting prepared.”

The agency’s forecasters predicted a 70 percent likelihood of 10 to 16 named storms with winds of 39 miles per hour or higher. Five to nine of those could become hurricanes, with winds of 74 m.p.h. or higher, and one to four could develop into major hurricanes, which have winds of 111 m.p.h. or higher.

By comparison, an average hurricane season produces 12 named storms. Six of those typically become hurricanes and three develop into major hurricanes.

Malfunction of Electric Panel in Long Island, NY

5/25/2018 (Permalink)

Electric Panel Caused Home/Fire

Electrical panels can cause terrible fires when your home or building has old components or has not had a reputable licensed electrical contractor inspecting and maintaining your system. DIY work is not advised with panels. If your electrical system has not been properly installed, or has been tinkered with - the breakers may not trip an shut off the panel as they should, in the event of a surge or overload. Additionally bad connections and materials can cause sparks that can ignite nearby combustibles.

The fire here in the photo was a Long Island, NY home that had a unexpected fire start in the electrical panel, located in the basement. You can see that the breaker is a total loss, an the fire spread rapidly.

We recommend installing smoke detectors in all utility areas of your home and high risk areas: garages, basements, utility closet, laundry rooms, by any heat or high risk areas like electric panels;washer/dryers; near space heaters; oil burners/furnaces; hot water heaters.

It is wise to keep a smoke detector installed and operating in your basement, garage and anywhere your electrical box is located.

Should you suffer a fire, know that SERVPRO of the North Fork is here to cleanup and restore your property.  We work with your insurance company to get you back to normal quickly!

Mold can Spread Quickly Anywhere On the North Fork

5/25/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can eat through wallboard, fabric and furniture - all food sources.

At SERVPRO of the North Fork, if you have damp areas with poor air circulation, you may have noticed the telltale musty odor that suggests the presence of mold.

Mold can cause health effects. We can see in the photo the visible mold covering walls, wood and furniture.  Why?  There is too much moisture along with ample food sources (wood & drywall) to feed the mold.

Areas that have mold affecting more than 10 square feet here on Long Island require an independent assessment from an environmental hygienist.

The hygienist' report will indicate what the remediation protocol will be - that is what we will follow.  Don't wait after a water event!  The longer mold is left to grow, the larger and more costly a problem you will have.  Mold won't go away on it's own and splashing bleach on mold is ineffective - it doesn't kill the mold, which will regrow.

Think you have mold? Call 631-591-3771.

Building Fire Codes and Requirements Follow the Regulations in your Area

5/25/2018 (Permalink)

Fires can disrupt a business operations or end a business altogether - follow the regulations in your area.

For businesses, your local Fire Marshal will have specific building fire codes and requirements for your local township as well as for your type of structure, given its age and type of business.

Generally all plans will include smoke detectors, illuminated exit signs, and certified inspected commercial fire extinguishers. You may be required to have a sprinkler or fire suppression system or alarm system.  Emergency exits and signage will be required.  Multi-unit or mixed-use commercial/residential buildings may have special requirements for common areas. The Fire Marshal routinely inspects commercial premises annually and will expect any noted or flagged items during the visit to be installed or remedied quickly for the followup visit.

New construction will have more comprehensive requirements, so working with the building department is advisable during planning stages. There may be extra requirements in the code, depending on the type of building and the scope of your business.  The NFPA, National Fire Protection Association has literally hundreds of reports on different standards for different applications, visible on their website.

A Fire Can Kill A Business - Our Top 10 List To Recover

5/25/2018 (Permalink)

Fires can devastate a business.

Fire.  Combustible material.  Oxygen.  Three things that guarantee a raging fire.  When it is in a firepit - you are the fire master - king of the neighborhood.  But when your business burns down, you feel small, beaten and lost.

I sympathize.  My family endured a catastrophic fire at the family business not too long ago.  It was one of the biggest fires ever had on the North Fork, with multiple districts responding. It was a total loss, and deeply painful.  I'd like to share my top 10 list for what to do after calling 911.

#1 Have ALL utilities and property services temporarily suspended - if the fire is still active and there is a live gas line to your building or an adjacent/nearby unit, you have a deadly  situation!  Immediately report it to both 911 and National Grid's 24/7 hotline 1-800-490-0045 to get an emergency shut off.

#2  If you have adjacent or nearby tenants, residents or businesses alert them immediately - they may have situations you are unaware of where your situation puts them in great peril.

#3 Alert all employees and set up a mass communication method - a group text, group email or private Facebook group.

#4  Call your insurance company who will send an adjuster.

#5 Call an independent public insurance adjuster too to make sure your insurance settlement is for the full amount you are entitled to.

#6 Take clear photos that accurately convey the degree of damage of the structure and affected contents - don't put yourself in danger.

#7  Secure the property to avoid injuries, vandals and theft.  We do board up/tarp ups for homes and businesses 24/7.

#8  Call us for cleanup, packout and restoration - we handle fire damages of any size.  We clean and carefully pack away as much as possible, which costs less than replacement.  Heat, smoke, water and fire fighting chemicals can cause damages where replacement may be necessary.  After your space has been rebuilt, we'll deliver all that was stored.

#9  The next order of business is to go back to business!  Immediately - any way you can, any where you can - in a trailer, from your kitchen table, temporary rented space.  A closed business has no business and is likely to never reopen.  Don't wait for a rebuild, new fancy desks and chairs.  Start NOW.

#10 A fire is devastating, but get social.  Share with your community, vendors, customers, fans on social media.  Keep them informed with regular updates and accept their support and encouragement!  They are rooting for you.

Those 'Old House Smells' - you'd rather not have!

5/24/2018 (Permalink)

Odors in homes and buildings can be both unpleasant, distracting and cause illness.

"Old house smell" could be a symptom of mildew and mold within the walls, so you'll need to identify the source areas before tackling this issue (mold versus the inherent smells of a very well lived-in dwelling).  SERVPRO of the North Forth can assist with these bothersome smells by finding the source and then eliminating it.

SERVPRO uses specific methods and products to get the best results.  For example, Special Deodorizer is an alcohol-based odor removal product that dissolves and removes noxious odors from affected areas without heavy masking perfumes by acting directly on the source of the odor.  Special Deodorizer is effective on a number of odors and is the product to turn to when others do not work. It is proven to remove various odors from sources such as cigarette and cigar smoke, pet urine, vomit, soured milk, mold, mildew and bacteria.

We have equipment and cleaning devices as well that are effective in eliminating long standing odors.

SERVPRO of the North Fork, uses only approved products and maintains a good feedback with the community. With many old houses, this kind of issue is routine for our team.  If your house or building has unpleasant odors, call SERPVRO of the North Fork and breathe deeply once more!

Storm Season - Damage Prevention Tips for the North Fork

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Rain and storms on the east end's North Fork can be damaging.

We are now entering storm and hurricane season, we all need to take precautions to protect our homes, businesses and properties.  Whether it's a hurricane, tornado, thunderstorms or another form of extreme weather, your home could experience significant water damage, flooding or destruction to both interior and exterior portions of the structure and infrastructure.  Nevertheless, we can take precautions to minimize the potential damage as these storms could cause significant losses to your property.

Tip #1:  Inspect your garage doors, windows, roof and trees surrounding the building.  Once you identify these areas, you can take measures to help reinforce them which will most likely reduce the damage.  Anchor loose connections, repair any existing damage.

Tip #2:  Trim back any loose branches and limbs that pose a threat.

Tip #3:  Remove and store or anchor any loose unsecured items that may become airborne in high winds.

While taking these precautions does not guarantee your home or business won't endure some storm & water damage, they can help reduce the degree of damage.

If your home or business is damaged by storm SERVPRO of the North Fork can help! Call us 631-531-3771.
